I witnessed an aircraft circling over the Highlands of Scotland for approx 90 mins on Tues 9th March. It was high in the sky 30 odd thousand feet up. What could be a possible reason for this please?

Tanker? AWACs?

More than likely an E-3 Sentry. The aircraft carries a large radar mounted on a rotodome. Did it produce a circular contrail?

Yes TEEEJ, it did produce a contrail just like the one in your link. I took several photos of it.
