why do they strap the fan blades to the vanes preventing the LP comp and turbine from rotating during an engine core wash. wouldn't it be better to let the LP rotate for the cleanliness of the compressor/turbine along with the IP and HP ??

thanks

Edit: ok so it has no LP comp other than the fan blade, but still wouldn't the LP turbine rotating provide faster flow and suction to clean the guts out ? :P

Hey Ahmed,

The fan strapping depends on the type of wash being done. If it's using a lance then you have to strap the fan as you need to direct the flow of water through the fan into the core. It's probably not required for other setups e.g. Juniper or Cyclean.

Ref the actual cleaning though, the wash is for the compressor, the wash doesn't clean the turbine. The main benefit comes from cleaning the compressor aerofoils to restore their aerodynamic shape and bring the compressor efficiency back up.

Cheers,
