Since a few months we have some serious problems on the 744 with failing dimmer control units which controls the overhead panel lighting. Often it is the fuse which is blown. Has anyone experience with this?
You've got a partial/intermittent short James. Perhaps a chaffed wire in a loom or a problem inside one of the panels on P5. Good old fashioned wiring checks will be the only way to find this fault.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunetaly it is not only one aircraft but almost the whole fleet. We suspect the dimmer control unit, but it is hard to proof that. We have checked the fuse, the aircraft wiring, the dimmer control panel...etc
