US to charge tourists for entering country | Travel | guardian.co.uk (http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2010/mar/05/us-charge-tourists-to-enter)

Many who have kept an eye on this issue have seen it coming for some time now. No date given yet, but the plan is to charge $10 per ESTA application, the money raised being used to fund tourism-related advertising campaigns. The cost is less than expected - I believe numbers closer to £20 had been floating about

For the meantime however, ESTA remains free (but of course, only if you get it from the official website! https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov)
