Why can't I have an exit seat?

This has been buggin me for ages but why oh why do airlines refuse to give passengers (who check in early, and who maybe need the extra legroom due to hight etc etc) Emergency exit seats. If this wasn't bad enough, they then try to fob u off with the old " Please check with the person at the gate 15 mins prior to boarding to see if a seat is available " Wot is going on...Please some one help me ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!

The pax occupying these seats must be able to

a. be fit & strong enough to operate the exit
b. Be able to fit out the exit

Nothing worst than being stuck behind someone who cant or wont get out an exit. J class seats may costs more but at least you will get your leg room

Not in any way making a judgement about you but the passengers who sit in these seats must be carefully selected able-bodied passengers. No:
