View Full Version : What are those vertical metal tabs on top of wings?

I see them on most wings. On top behind the leading edge, about 2 cm high and 10 cm long running front to back, and spaced horizontally about 1/2 meter.

I guess it is a visual gauge to eyeball ice buildup. No way can something that little have an aerodynamic function.

Vortex Generators. They drag turbulent air from outside the boundary layer down into the boundary layer, thereby re-energising it and allowing the airflow to remain attached to the wing at higher angles of attack and thus lowering the stalling speed. e mail me if you want to know more!!!
