Hello,

I was seeking some up to date information on the Royal Australian Airforce Crew Attendant position.

Specifically with regard to the VIP base. Does anyone know if you are able to choose which base you would like to be in?

Reason for asking as I am only interested in flying out of Canberra on the VIP fleet, not the A330 fleet out of Amberley.

If anyone out there works for the RAAF or knows of someone that does, I would really appreciate some further info regarding duty / rosters. E.g if you are on standby 24/7 or on a rotation.

Many thanks :)

The Aus military works 24/7 on combat roes. The combat role are located globally. You join the Australian Military, you do 24/7 globally...

If you join as a stewadrd, you may not even get a chance to apply for aircrew. You could be posted anywhere in Australia. If you are good enough to pass the section board , and pass the training then you may get posted to the VIP fleet. It takes years and dedication to get there.

The attitude you are displaying in that short post, probably wouldnt get you through the door at recruiting...

With all due respect to the young lady mentioned in the article, you're telling me that as a 19 year old it took her years of dedication to get there, flying on the VIP fleet?

I was under the impression there were only two bases for the Crew Attendant mustering. Canberra and Amberley?

I am sorry but you have it all wrong, and should go down to Virgin for a job.

When you join the Air Force as a steward there is no garrantee that you may get a flying assignment, and further more no chance to dictate where you will be based.

Whilst I found the Air Force would listen to requests, not always could or would they be granted.

If you joined the RAAF your first priority would be the needs of the service and if you are not prepared to accept that, you should look else where. I also suspect that you may have to be a little older and capable of taking rants from pollies or worse the PM.

I could be correct but I know of no 19 year old stewards flying with the RAAF.

Me thinks the link above is a credible source to confirm there is a 19yo Flight Steward currently assigned to 34Sqn.....

RAAF joiner... whilst I'm in NZ and not regular military... I do agree that once enlisted you generally have no say over your postings etc.... the Service will decide where your skills and talents are most wanted, so be prepared to be posted to where ever, that's part of joining the military. Later on once you're a bit further up the food chain, you may be able to apply for certain assignments but they could only be 2-3yr posts and then you'll be moved on to keep you "fresh" and "upskilled"...

Greatly appreciate the info.

It's a shame the defence jobs site doesn't mention any of the above information. It just staes the job description, entry requirements and training. Hence why it may appear I have it all wrong. Only going on what information they have provided and it seems to vary from what people are saying on here.

I currently fly as a manager with a major international airline, with years of experience and was seeking the airforce as a new venture.

I shall call the careers advisors and seek further clarification.

Since you " currently fly as a manager with a major international airline, with years of experience ........ " you shouldn't need much clarification. All the clues are here - and in the photo in the newspaper article!:ok:

If you had mentioned that you had training and experience, my answer would have been slightly different. If there are aircrew vacancies, then possibly you may be recruited for that position. It will still be some time before you get airborne, as there will be recruit training to get through (no where near as hard as it was when I did it), and no doubt some more training to cover the Airforce way of doing things.

By all means go for it, and go hard. You need to impress the Recruiters, and the Specialist selection teams.

Good luck in your efforts.

As an aside, I survived 22Yrs in the RAAF, but things have changed slightly over the last few years. I believe that contact counseling is now out, and you are not allowed to yell at anyone anymore....:ugh::ugh:

And Heaven forbid one actually writes what they think about a poor trainee. Why that's "defamatory", and attracts the thinly veiled threat of legal action. We reap what we sew.....................

RAAF Joiner. I was posted to Richmond up until fairly recently (where Crewatt training was then conducted). I know several current and ex Crewatts personally. The job is not easy to get into because they want a certain look and personality type. Quite a few get knocked back early in the recruitment process.
You may be what they are looking for, don't know 'till you try. As for training, judging by the ones I know, It can't be too hard.
RAAF rookies is the easiest in defence, Avmed is easy, Comsurv is cool, I didn't find it hard ( I'm Army) and you should have no real trouble with the airman aircrew courses given your current position.
