DHL are whistleblower

Air Cargo News is reporting (see link) that DHL has admitted that they were the whistleblower, leading to the worldwide investigation of freight forwarders. They have been granted immunity from prosecution. Also reporting that head of airfreight for Panalpina has stepped down.

It has been long-suspected that DHL was the company that first went to the authorities, allowing it to claim immunity from prosecution and fines.
In a statement the company claims that it “became aware, during the course of an internal investigation that activities potentially raising concerns under the competition laws may have occurred”. It then goes on to state that it has “been granted immunity from prosecution and fines by the European Commission conditional upon DHL Global Forwarding continued cooperation”.

DHL issued its statement following the widespread issuing by the EU’s Statement of Objections to major freight forwarders they believe are implicated in the anti-competition investigation. DHL confirmed that it “was among the companies having received a copy of the Statement of Objections”.

Further details of the exact nature of the charges were also revealed, with DHL confirming that: “The Statement of Objections concerns alleged coordinated conduct related to different surcharges, none of which is, or relates to, fuel.”

The DHL spokesperson confirmed that the surcharges central to the investigation are; new export system surcharge, advance manifest system surcharge, currency adjustment factor and peak season surcharge.

It had previously been widely reported that fuel surcharges were at the centre of the anti-competition investigation.

DHL also confirmed that its own internal investigation into the activities is continuing and said no decision on disciplinary action against its own staff had yet been made.

This is the freight forwarding arm of DHL, the old Danzas, & connected to the Express division only by name & ownership.

It all has to do with the losing chess game that DHL played in the USA with FedEx and UPS. Because of their forign ownership, they were forced to cease operations as a US flag carrier, start up ASTAR, I think they have been dragging out the Airborne Express merger to fly under their cert. A convoluted mess and they were probably trying to hurt all compitition by self disclosing probable purposfull violations to fall under protection laws wile all the compitition had their books gone over.

Could you explain what you mean by this? Are you saying DHL wants to fly under an ABX certificate?

ABX still has an operating certificate operating alot of aircraft.

I agree that they are out to hit compitition globally, just do not think it would have happened if they were not out to hit the major players in the USA as a result of their struggle that FEDEX and UPS brought upon them.

A crafty bunch, I remember a charter World had/has with EMERY with WOA, they were CRAF partners at the time, the military payed for a MD-11 to fly from Dayton to BRU, they would carry emery freight as well. Kicker was empty space would go to DHL. Ask yourself why it was cheaper for DHL to put freight on another carrier over flying it themselves?
