Hi, does anybody know if haemorrhoids could affect on medical clearance for cabin crew???
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Don't know about the medical, but I do know they can be a pain in the bum.

I hesitate to tell this tale, but I will anyway. I know just how b:mad:y painful this problem can be.

Working in the cabin on busy flights could result in a heavy overhead of pain for hours. Come to think of it, I recall calling in sick one day...I made the mistake of telling them what was wrong. Never allowed to forget it.

Thinking about it more, I realize that it was halfway through a duty day. Getting back to base was a chance to cry off. It was that bad.


Later, but when I was only in my early 30s, and practicing judo and karate a minimum of 3 nights a week. I had to stop karate because the high kicks were tearing something up my jacksie.

After weeks of doctors advice and every kind of goo being applied with no results, I started coaxing the problem back form whence it had come while showering. I would stand in the shower like a lemon - for protracted periods - with me thumb...or at least a digit, holding everything in place.:ooh:

It really wasn't that long. 5 mins or so a time, and it worked. Somehow the stretched walls gained enough power to stay put. No problems for the next 40 years, and I've advised (close) friends to do the same. 100% success.

What a most brilliant answer to a painful and avoided subject,it should be Notammed for the benefit of aviators worldwide. At least you avoided the hot poker treatment,well at least thats what it felt like for some 6 weeks after the Op,not only barred from flying but also horse riding .It still brings tears to my eyes and it happened 15 years ago.
Stick to real ale rather than this new fangled stuff, it improves the flow if you get my drift !!

Topgun......as you will experience,most will look upon haemorrhoids,(piles) as a huge joke...even some quacks! Dont waste your time, get a referal from your GP to the department of "tubes" at your local hospital. Most piles can be dealt with these days by a simple pain free procedure. A tight rubber band is fired over the pile which then dies/shrinks into oblivion. Need to look at diet and exercise after to ensure a non return.

I lived with a lesion that I thought were bad hemmeriods
for years, I know well the painful to stand up feeling.

Well worth getting it checked properly, it *may* mean a
sigmoidoscopy (sp?) but....

They tried nitro-glycerine gel first, however, all that did was give me a
thumping headache, so, we went down the op route.. Ok, painful for a
week after, but, possibly the best thing in the long run.

I'd just been assuming it was just hemmeroids 'flaring up' but after
lectures from a) My GP, b) The consultant and c) The surgeon about
'that's what we're here for!' I learnt.

Very pleased with the NHS, excluding 4 weeks seeing of the Nitro gel
worked the whole thing was 8 weeks GP to surgery.

Aparently the Hemmeroids were not big enough to warrent banding and
it had been the lesion all along, for at least 15 years.

Looking back I *should* have had someting done earlier but, as others
have said the embaressment factor kicks in....

Don't let it!

We should get clear the distinction between hemorrhoids and piles.

In my, hopefully amusing, description of my showers, I didn't really say much about the care I was taking depressing and expelling the blood from the swelling. It was done carefully, in the upward direction, and no penetrative progress until the sac was nearly deflated.

For some reason, Anodesyn seemed far better than any of the other well advertised brands. (long term and with several patients)

For now, this link does not underplay the potential seriousness of the condition.

Humor aside

That's the one....

Years of bleeding and severe discomfort, however, the
underlying condition I wasn't aware of was the lesion I was
ignoring. Thinking the whole thing would go away...

Lateral sphincterotomy later and everything is well :-)
I still have minor discomfort and the odd bleed but, nothing like
before. Oh and I can stand up now.

Moral is: Never procrastinate that it will get better. It's very easy to laugh
at the condition, hell I did. I just didn't realise I was laughing at something
that wouldn't get better...

Ha ha....well well they do love their terminology.:) However, for most natives in "lil ol England" a lump up yer bum is a pile. Let the tube specialist have a looksee and dont suggest a portocaval anastamosis at this stage....he may send you to the colonies:)

I did look, but didn't really find a clear definition. I'd always assumed there was a major difference between the two.

I thought piles were often quite small, very extended parts of blood vessels that found their way out - like grapes on a vine - the nodules containing think or dried blood. It is easy to see how these might be strangled by a band. (Don't try this at home folks)

A haemorrhoid I thought, was often in the form of a large swelling outside the sphincter, but having traveled under the skin through or past the anus in some way. I think this is the type that is very painful.

Clearly, there is a blood vessel under the skin, and it is this that can be coaxed back. Doing the same with piles would be simply hiding them - very temporally.

Used to swear by Preparation-H, which shrunk mine very effectively - then I caught the Memsahib using it on the skin around her eyes - she says it's brilliant at shrinking wrinkles and bags......
