View Full Version : The BizJets AG & GA Photo Thread

INNflight
2nd Feb 2010, 21:27
Seeing as the recent ugly / gorgeous jet thread is quite popular with members posting photos, I thought a photo thread would be a neat idea (such as the Rotorheads forum and JetBlast has).

While most of the pictures in the other thread were linked from spotter sites I think it would be great seeing the photos of us members here in this one.

Compared to airline guys/gals, bizjet pilots get around a lot more and dare I say the destinations are often nicer / more picturesque, so I am sure all of you have some gorgeous files on the drives.

Let's share away and keep the spirit of bizav high in these troubling times :ok:

Genuine question here...

Does you owner/boss have any issue with crew publishing picture of the a/c they own/manage when the s/n or registration is clearly visible?

Just curiosity, mine. I might have some shots but I don't like to upset anyone for something so innocent yet...private.

Some cracking stuff, though!

In the case of the photo I posted, that aircraft has been sold, is in a different country and has a different registration.

As for pictures taken on public property, there is no restriction on publishing said photos in the US and most of the world.

Lovely aerial view there woody, just one of the nicest places in Europe isn't it.

I'm curious, how do you get beer money from your pics?

It's actually more of a part-time business than "beer money" for me. Flying and photography have always been my two biggest passions, so it only seemed logical to combine them. I don't particularly care about portrait photography or other niches, but really appreciate to depict the world of aviation in it's excitement and beauty (stop me before I get too romantic :})...

Heck, I even sometimes play "fence monkey" in my spare time

I'll PM you a few links, as I do not want to use this thread as advertising space.

Lovely photos HtG, keep them coming.

As for the copyright info, should you use any of the newer photoshop versions, there is an option in the menu bar, a drop down called "window" with the subpoint "layers". Click that and you should see a box when having a photo open.

There - once you created the text layer on your photograph - you can set the opacity of that layer from 100 percent to any other value. Hope that helps.

Papazulu,

I am using Canon bodies and lenses, currently the 1DmkIII DSLR. It's quite chunky and rather heavy to lurk around, but definitely top of the range in terms of image quality and speed.

First of the 4 is a Global Express XRS (Or 5000) "Classic".

Second one must be a 7X. Although the future XRS / 5000 cockpit will be very similar with the RC Pro Line Fusion on it.

The 802 is a great working machine. It makes most other ag aircraft pale by comparison. Those pictures were a few years ago, when working some fires out of Ontario, Oregon. That particular airplane was very low time, and nearly new.

Some PZL M18T Dromader shots from a few years ago. The short-nosed one Tanker T-455) is Garrett powered, and the second shot is it on a hillside after an engine failure during a wildfire. The last one is a Pratt powered airplane (Tanker T-451), one morning while preflighting.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k286/avbug/OakCityCanyon48.jpg

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k286/avbug/T-451.jpg

The 802 has a lot more performance than the M18, and carries 200 gallons more, if density altitude allows.

Some good shot's there Guppy, how'd you find the Drom compared to the Tractor? Is the Garret installation any better than the Pratt on the Drom? AG is not really comparable to Biz jets, different demographic. :8
Since they tacked AG onto this forum title there hasn't been many posts with AG content. Have you tried • Index page (http://sprayplane.net/forum/) , they have a fire thread there.

how'd you find the Drom compared to the Tractor? Is the Garret installation any better than the Pratt on the Drom?

The AT-802 has a lot more performance available than the M18T. The M18 is fairly forgiving, though it can be a fair amount of work in a strong crosswind, or when low level in the mountains in a stiff wind. The Dromader uses full control throws sometimes to effect a roll or a recovery, whereas the Air Tractor tends to use much smaller stick motions, and the effects of small movements to aircraft control are much more pronounced. The Stick doesn't get moved very far or very much in the Air Tractor. Not so, in the M18.

The M18 is fairly easy to land if one stays on top of the airplane. The Air Tractor, with it's spring gear, is a little more squirrely, and a lot less forgiving during landing. If the tailwheel happens to be unlocked, one may well be going for a ride in the Air Tractor. It's not too big a deal in the M18T.

I ended up in the bottom of a drainage hitting a spot fire a few years ago, in an 802. My intention was to exit down-canyon with a steep hard left turn, with my escape along a river. Given that I'd just exhausted the load on the spot fire, I elected to use my energy and climb power to see how much altitude I could pick up coming out of the canyon. In the Dromader, it would have been a down-canyon exit, but I came out of the canyon half-way down, over the top of the mountain instead of through it, nearly inverted and still pulling with extra energy. It was an eye opener; the performance was more than I expeced, and the airplane flew quite nicely all the way out.

Empty, either one is somewhat of a dog. The 802 feels like just another ag airplane when it's loaded. At higher density altitudes with a full load of mud on board, it's not exactly sprightly. Empty, it's a racecar, so far as ag airplanes go. Loaded it's still faster than the M18. Especially with the spray gear off the airplane, in fire configuration.

On the M18T, while I prefer Pratt motors, the Garret had one decided advantage during a steep downhill drop. We set up the motors and propellers via rigging to provide a significant braking force at flight idle. The effect was like coming through beta into reverse, without the loss of rudder. In level flight, retarding the power lever to idle produced a strong enough retarding force that it could throw me forward in my shoulder straps, and a brisk forward motion on the stick, into the vertical, was necessary to keep the airplane flying.

Tweaking the power lever around the sweet spot where this occurred, just above idle, proved to be a very effective tool for controlling speed during a descent. In the pratt powered airplanes, one has to be careful about how one makes a downhill run, to keep speed in check. The M18T has a fairly narrow airspeed range for drops; the BLM published safety notices regarding a 15 knot window for the drop; slower and one stalls during the drop, faster and the airplane can pitch such that full forward stick won't prevent going vertical (and a stall-spin or stall-crash, which may prove inevitable) if dropping the full load. The Garrett motor allowed easy airspeed control, and worked like a charm when doing formation descents and drops, especially when working behind dissimiliar aircraft. If behind a leadplane on a downhill drop in the pratt powered airplanes, one can't do much once at flight idle to keep behind a slower airpalne except jink slightly or pitch; that puts one outside the drop box or envelope. With the Garrett, it's an easy process.

The downside is that if things come unglued with the garret, performance can get really ugly, where the same isn't nearly so true with the Pratt powered airplanes. I can testify to that, having wound up on a hillside during a very active wildfire several years ago, during a torque loss.

Mutt, that should be the famous 400LS, Garrett powered. (lack of the proper 6 lever layout - only 4, naaaw, no good, me is a PT-6 man :-) )

From Wikipedia:

Cheyenne PA 42 1000 max S/L speed (cruise) 335 knots, four-blade prop, or with new 5-blade German MT prop nearer to 340 knots.

So the american approach (got to be faster, lets have a bigger engine) plus german engineering make for a real runner...

In fact, look at FMS1 and 2 scratch pads:
FMS1 shows A/C-1117-G-HARF
FMS2 shows FAYAIR

First, I was looking for the registration but didn't see it; then I started to look for details...
I believe the picture was taken during the delivery or acceptance of the aircraft. JP BizJet 1996 shows that 1117 was delivered on December 21 1991, and the FMS database was valid since December 12...

After G-HRDS, its owner has received a second brand new G550 recently, registered December 20 2010... Another Christmas gift? :)

Savannah Jet, a question for you concerning the G2, serial no: 001. Has that aircraft been converted to a G2B, that is a G2 fuselage but with G3 wings?

Savannah Jet
21st Apr 2011, 02:31
N55RG is a Gulfstream 2SP. It has the blended winglet conversion on the original Gulfstream 2 wing.

A Gulfstream 2B is a Gulfstream 2 which has been retro-fitted with the cleaner, more efficient wing from the later Gulfstream 3.

They look similar - the easiest way to tell is that the winglet on the Gulfstream 2SP curves around and up, like on a BBJ/737NG. The Gulfstream 2B/Gulfstream 3 winglet has a much sharper, more well defined angle to it, as you can see in the photo of a Gulfstream 2B below.

http://admin2.clikpic.com/BethpageJet/images/N129WA-2063w800p.jpg

N55RG also has the glass fibre radome from the Gulfstream 3 fitted, giving the nose a sharper profile than the original Gulfstream 2.

I hope you're all listening - I'll be asking questions later

Lol, excellent!

An excerpt from the accident reports reads:

The CitationJet departed Burlington (BTV) around 14:45 on May 15th 2005 on a routine flight to Atlantic City (AIY). The pilot first made a low pass along runway 29 and then returned to land on runway 11. After touchdown the airplane failed to stop within the confines of the runway and entered the Intercoastal Waterway. The occupants were recovered by boat.

According to the Cessna 525A Landing Distance Chart, a CJ2 with a landing weight of 11,000 pounds required 2,930 feet of landing distance with zero wind. With a 10 knot tailwind (which was the approx wind at the time of the accident) the airplane required 3,500 feet of landing space. Runway 11 at Bader Field is 2,948 foot-long. Furthermore Bader Field does not usually accept jet aircraft.

Probable Cause: "Pilot error in which the following were factors:

1. A poor decision to land at an airport with insufficient runway length.
2. Misjudgement in executing the landing resulting in a late touchdown.
3. A poor decision to land with a 10kt (or more) tailwind."

Perhaps one could then follow the practice on Rotorheads where those posting provide basic details of the aircraft and its location. The more information the better.

Thanks!

As for information I don't know about the aircraft, as I had just parked next to it, but it was in Frankfurt Main; I don't even know which Gulfstream it is! It was late in the day, and the light really makes this one.

Looking the other way was another Gulfstream; the light still great but the aircraft did not look as good.

I think this event should not pass without some acknowledgement, so for all you Gulfstream fans out there...

Chicago-Palwaukee, IL - Sunday Sept 9th 2012.

Almost 46 years after first taking to the air, and following 42 years of service with it's only owner, the late Robert W Galvin and family, the very first Gulfstream jet N55RG serial number 1, departed PWK for the last time. At 10 AM local, she roared into the air off RW34 for a 1h 25m flight down to Charlotte, NC.

She will shortly go on display at the Carolinas Aviation Museum.

Here she is at PWK shortly before departure...
