Better flight management could cut aviation emissions by up to 95% : Heathrow Airport News Stories (http://uk-airport-news.info/heathrow-airport-news-010210.html)
Praised as one of the best Universities on the planet, they seem to have come up with something that many people on here could have told them a long time ago...
However, 95% seems VERY steep!
Our government invest £millions in Universities every year, maybe they should now take notice...

Everyone in the industry has known this for years - except the 95% cut claim is WAY WAY over the top! As an example, there was a trial on the Pacific with United, QANTAS and ANZ where every possible ATM trick was used - immediate take-off clearance, direct routings, in flight re-routings to use best winds and priority approaches and the savings were about 5%!!!
Things are gradually moving that way with developments such as the Single European Sky (SESAR). One enormous source of savings would be if the Americans introduced a slot system such as used in Europe instead of the current free-for-all where everyone timetables an 08.00 departure and then queue up on the taxiway burning fuel for up to an hour!

Why do people concentrate on aviation for being the biggest polluter. Nobody has ever questioned why sea travel has never been included in the pollution figures as a great amount of co2 is pumped out by ships all over the world but they never get mentioned.

The article linked to in the first post is a classic example of misquoting!
The original paper can be found here:-

The figure given for possible savings for better ATM in Europe (ie SESAR) is 12%.
The 95% figure is combining ALL possible souces of savings - aerodynamics, blended wing bodies, new engine technology, new fuel technology etc.

the cement industry make a lot of CO2 as a result of manufacture, about 5% of all global man-made CO2 emissions, whereas air transport is 2%.
