View Full Version : DGCA help for a wannabe

Hey, guys.

I'm currently working on an FAA licence and do hope to get it converted in the future to an Indian. I fly pretty leisurely and like to take my time trying out every plane in the hangar (God damn, I love to fly). Now the catch is, a friend recently mentioned something on the lines of 'DGCA approved aircraft' in terms of training and converting from FAA to Indian. He said that for conversion purposes, the DGCA will only consider hours that I've put in on these DGCA approved/registered/whatever aircraft.

I've already tried Googling and looking around the DGCA's website and PPRuNe, but to no avail. In an ideal world, I would have just gone around flying every plane and still put in those 250 on a C-152/Duchess, but my empty pockets don't make this an ideal world, so I'm gonna have to spend thriftily.

So basically, what I mean to ask is, does the DGCA only recognize training done on particular aircraft? Is there a list of these birds somewhere on their cryptic website? ANY help would be appreciated.

Thanks, guys.

Oi, guys, thanks a lot. Seriously, this is a lot of help.

Hey, aviatior1989 and babboo57, I went through that list. I gathered that it's a list of all aircraft registered in India at this point of time. Does that also mean that you're only allowed to train in those aircraft?

For instance, we have a C-150K where I'm at right now, and the list only has a C-150M. That's a really small difference right there, so I was wondering if something like that would affect my hours on it not being considered while converting. Also, there's a DA20 which is a sweet, slow ride for a lazy day. That list up there has the DA40 on it, which is a 4 seater variant of the DA20. Again, will my hours on the DA20 be useless?

Again, guys, thanks a lot.

i have 100 on da 20
20 on da 40
100 on c152 and c172
rest on be76 summing it up to 250.i have the indian cpl converted from faa. Just have to meet the requirements given in their conversion flowchart which have to be on a dgca approved aircraft.so in india am licenced to fly c152 and be 76 only.

LICENSING RULES AND REGULATIONS (http://dgca.nic.in/licencing/conver.htm)

and its good to have an experience of low /high wings and joystick/yoke.have fun!

@jono987

well u got first-hand information from the horses mouth - the horse here being ssietbunny :)
great to read what fun u are having flying. most students i know want the
shortest cut - so they go fast and furious - not enjoying the journey at all, more so
because they are wearing blinkers anyway !

enjoy !

Hey, sorry for the super late reply, but I just wanted to make sure I thanked you guys appropriately. Thanks ssietbunny, that sure sorts everything out. Someone's gonna be having a lot of fun in the skies!

Yeah, I know what you mean, babboo57. I don't really get it why you'd want to plough through such a sweet experience either. I figure it's probably the prospects of flying big ol' commercial jumbos and earning tons of cash, but you gotta love general aviation.

Could someone help me with my query?

I did my Multi Instrument rating in 2008 on a BE76. Renewed it last year on a Piper Seminole. This year I am planning to renew it on a PN68 cos we don't have a Duchess nearby. I have already done my day and night check on the PN68.

Now, will I have to build 10hrs on this ac and 5 hrs Instrument time?

Dear flyboy_nz,
you said that you renewed your multi Engine IR on the Seminole...Did you face any problems with the DGCA...since it does not belong to the list of aircraft registered in India...A friend of mine, who is planning to complete his command hours in the Seminole wanted me to find out..Do you know whether he would face a problem with that...?

Thanx

cheers,
Sahil

Even though dgca lists be76 as an approved airplane, there is only one duchess in India, and that too if I am not mistaken, belongs to the bihar government. So dunno if the duchess is an ideal airplane to get the multi endorsment. I did my multi in a 76 but was not able to convert it and finally gave up and got it done on a b200.

@dividby0

Why ? Did the dgca reject the BE-76 ?:ugh:
I thought it was accepted by them :(

silent_scream
7th May 2010, 01:24
Greeting's every one.

@divdby0, on what grounds did DGCA reject your BE76 rating ?
The only cause I can see is the lack of recency and skill test.
Was it more than 6 months after your last flight that you applied to DGCA for your license ?

Every one seems to be missing something here.
The problem back in 2005 - 06 -07 was that all your final checks had to be done in India. Since one couldn't perform a skill test on a BE76 or any other airplane which is not present in India, it was advised that one get a Multi Engine Rating on a airplane which is available for a Skill test ride in India (Seneca, B200, P68,etc).

But after the circular in 2008 (I think), it was ascertained that one could perform all checks abroad and just submit the papers to DGCA for license issue.

And ever since then, there has been no requirement for following any list.
Just ensure you have the recency requirements and off you go with a CPL.

All the best.

jimmygill
7th May 2010, 06:34
Grounds of rejection are based on the wording in one of the circulars

"the aircraft should be registered and available in India"

Even though BE-76 is registered it is not available as its Airworthiness Certificate has not been renewed since long.

Point to be noted, DGCA has been issuing BE-76 endorsements all this while by neglecting the proper wording, and suddenly someone thought lets go by the book.

divdby0
7th May 2010, 19:40
I was not able to get the duchess endorsed because of lack of an airplane to do the flight test in. When I asked a cfi about the same back in 2007, he said the only duchess available in India is not fit to fly in.

The catch is DGCA approves training done abroad on airplanes not available in India. My company is procuring a jet now which doesnt have a approved flight examiner in India. But the only requirement was an NOC from DGCA and a course from Flight safety international. Of course, they have recommended familiarisation flights but no flight test on type. If thats approved, I wonder why there's an issue with an aircraft like say Be-76. If safety is an issue, they can probably recommend more hours on type when you do your training abroad.

hi guys,
i was thinking why is piper Seminole not recognized in India ...is it just for flight test or u cannot log any hours of it in ur logbooks ( be it solo or dual )
as i have seen many people clocking there hours in an aircraft ...which India or dgca must not have been aware of ..i.e.jabiru,liberty xl2,technam ,but still its solo or dual hours are still valid while conversion,
and i have seen many license gone through
so why not Seminole then :ugh:

i need you guys help
plz help
thanks :ok:

Hi everyone..i am a new member from india and hold a current Indian/Canadian CPL. I was reviewing the posts..as everyone i am also confused about the DGCA requirement on which aircraft type that I should undergo my multi training.

I just want to play it safe and get the multi rating on an aircraft currently flying in india like PA34 or C90. Can someone tell me any schools in US or elsewhere that offer ME rating on any of the following
1. Piper Seneca PA34
2. King Air C90 or
3. Super King air B200

many thanks

I am looking to acquire an Indian PPL but completing flight training within India is always a problem.

Would it be possible for me to apply for an SPL with the DGCA, get the computer number but complete the flying training in the US, return and give the 3 exams as per rules? Would the hours logged in the US be accepted by the DGCA?

Or is it easier to get the US PPL converted?

silent_scream
3rd Jun 2010, 02:33
@imran,

The seminole might pass through as well, considering you complete the skill test and the proper documentation from abroad.

@ ram,
I do not know of schools but you can not compare the PA 34 with B200 or C90. The latter 2 are going to be a lot more expensive than the former.
Know the price quotes ?
I'd say stick to the PA 34. Plenty available everywhere.

@ flycougar,

DGCA will not honor just flying hours, you will have to get a License along with it.
Its safest to get your PPL from there and then get it converted.
But if you must, try visiting the DGCA at the open house meeting.

Do let us know find.

All the best all of you.

@silentscream: yes i would get a PPL from the US. But I have heard that it is difficult to get a foreign PPL converted. So would it be better if I just gave the exams again?

Another question for the experts here: there are a couple of schools offering "express flight training": 2/3 hours a day finishing off the 60 required hours in 20-25 working days. This in contrast to the Govt flying institutes where daily averages are much less.

Which is better from the learning perspective? Does an expedited schedule of 2/3 hours a day allow for the kind of learning required?

@FLYCOUGAR,

Clear your PPL exams and Indian Class 1 medical before you start your training.
Complete your training and get your PPL along with all DGCA requirements of Skill test, Cross country flight and Documentation (Refer Schedule II and Conversion flow chart on DGCA website).
Come back and submit the documents. No one can stop your Indian PPL.

Flying training, like courer business, has its express line. But if you want to learn, and you sound like you want to, then go with a pace where you are comfortable in understanding and practicing the exercises. You will never regret it.

All the Best.

If he wants to only do his PPL, a Class II medical will suffice. If he wants to continue to CPL, he will need a ClassI.

18th Nov 2010, 16:55
@Flycougar...why would you want to do a PPL/CPL right now with 3000++ pilots and no openings? I am assuming you have the connections and the extra money.

If you are just hobby flier then it's fine! Otherwise I feel I should warn you of the situation, do a lot more research on the job situation, seriously.

hi
its been 11 months now since i last flew her.bcoz of som issues with the school i submitted my docs 5 months later i last flew. then dgca asked for some more docs for which the school took 5 more months to issue me the reqd docs.so now 11 months ill b submiting all the docs only to have a month in hand to actually have a endorsed lic.
so just want to ask is there anything by which i can ask dgca to extend my ratings validity for a month or 2.
looking forward to some suggestions.

Hi
I got my CPL from FlightSafety Academy
None of the aircrafts there are registered in India. Not even the Piper Seminole
I REPEAT, PIPER SEMINOLE, PA44 IS NOT REGISTERED IN INDIA.
I am having a lot of issues with my conversion because of it.

I am also looking to fly in the USA and would like to which academy has the aircrafts that are registered in India. I saw Sunrise Aviation and was wondering if that's a good option.
