Pilot Pacifier

I've just recently returned to the UK from Dayton, Ohio.
A friend and I checked in three bags between us, flew United between Dayton and Washington, and then Virgin Upper Class IAD- LHR.
We had a 6hr lay over at IAD and whilst in the lounge we asked if our baggage had been put through and was told that it had and would be on the flight.
Guess what, it wasn't. At LHR, Virgin told us it would be delivered the next day (Saturday). My two bags arrived Tuesday and my friends Wednesday.
We had also brought two new Samsonite hard-cases whilst in the US, and these are seriously scratched as if they had been used for a number of years.
Is there any way to seek compensation? What is the best way to go about it? Anyone with similar experiences? Many thanks in advance!
