"A light aircraft was headed toward the city when they had a technical failure," said Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks.
A couple were flying with their two children when the plane's propeller apparently broke off.
The plane crash-landed on the shore at Warner beach south of Durban, narrowly missing about 70 to 100 beach-goers.
Wicks said the man suffered lacerations to his head and ear. His family was uninjured. They were all they taken to the Kingsway hospital.
