Hi Everyone,

I'm thinking of getting laser eye surgery done in a few months and I'm not sure what the reg's are regarding the medical validity after the surgery.

I've also heard that the US DoD and UK MoD recommend a particular type of vision correction surgery and not sure which one it is.

Does anyone have any info or can you share with me your thoughts, recommendations or experiences if you yourself have undergone corrective eye surgery recently and how things went for you afterwards both in and out of the cockpit.

Thanks

Someone will be along in a mo with the official reference, but from memory, you need to allow a period after the surgery to be sure the correction is stable and there are no significant side effects.

I had LASIK done over 9 years ago at Moorfields for correction of quite severe myopia. The recovery was very rapid (pretty good vision within 24 hours, and the correction has been stable since then, except for the inevitable onset of reading glasses/varifocals :(

I think I'm right in saying that laser corrective surgery is not encouraged for certain classes of professional flying.

had mine done about 18 month ago,in UK.
went with the wavefront (an extra)where the laser measures the ridges in cornea and corrects for,and the intralase(another extra)where the laser bevels the cut giving better healing and reduced risk of glare.
had -1.75 and -1.25 before ,correction after was excellent
medical is suspended cant remember exactly how long check on the website, you have about 3rd check with your surgeon he writes letter for you to CAA (most important no glare,no haze detected) CAA ask for another £60 and eye test with their bloke to confirm at gatwick.
your age and amount of correction (the less the better) seem to be key to best results aswell as type of surgery .(dont skimp on cost you only get one good shot)
good luck

Lasik surgery is quite popular nowadays. Good news is that it has low controversial side effects or outcome meaning most surgeries are successful. Anyway, don't you think that we have the best medical apparatus nowadays that the only concern is doctor's error. Good Luck. Indianapolis Breast Augmentation (http://www.meridianplastic.com)
