AOPA Online: Unintentional King Air pilot: An interview with Doug White (http://www.aopa.org/aircraft/articles/2009/090414pilotsave.html)

Thread ran here with a lot of nonsense included in some statements....

'How many souls on board?'

Having once been sent off out over the desert to orbit at Lake Havasu City while they sent for the municipal Fire service in response to my 'two (out of three) greens', I must admit that I found the first question they asked over the R/T (how many souls on board?') a tad off-putting......

Though I guess it does make corpse-hunting in the wreckage a bit simpler.

Cusco:rolleyes:

Apart from the fatality a fantastic story and exceptional "out of the box" thinking on the part of the ATC controller.
He got a buddy on the phone who is (or was) a King Air instructor and relayed all the appropriate info.

As a 300hr PPL (with MEP) 25 years ago I underwent the entire conversion onto a Be200 as part of a company safety up-skilling programme - over a week of ground school then 20 odd hours in the stim before a couple of hours of general handling and a flt test - I then logged 12.7 hours in the beast before the bean counters decided it was way too expensive...

From my addled memory - not at all hard to fly but inertia on short African gravel strips was interesting, recall engaging Beta just as the mains were about to touch down.

Good skills that man!

I did it at Lanseria with the lady instructor who sadly perished about 10 years ago. RIP.

This guy, 'Airboyd', did a great job posting the cockpit recording of the whole incident on You Tube. The pilot dies from 00:26-00:31 of the tape.

It's a bit frustrating that the recording stops on finals!

The FAA recording in my original post does contain the R/T on the runway......the boy sounds real emotional to be down on the deck!!!

The YouTube clip is right down to the rollout on mine.

As a C90 'pilot assistant' on private cat, approach radar controller and flight instructor I can relate to this situation. Very salutary, and not to be taken lightly. I was on the edge of my seat.

In the words of Young Mr Grace they all did very well.
