I just travelled from IAH to LHR and noticed that one of the crew read some piece of paper (not newspaper or magazine) during take off and landing. Is that "allowed"?

Not turning into a bashing thread. Just interested really.

No as crew we shouldn't be reading anything during take off and landing phases. We need to do our ''Silent Review'' - reviewing our emergency landing/ditching drills, reviewing our brace position, our commands we would shout, our door drills, what we need to check ie.hazards and door mode, evac alarms, what to do if door is blocked, where our equipment is all stowed, who is responsible for it and various other things to keep us ''situationally aware''. So strictly speaking no crew shouldn't be reading during take off/landing. Pegasus no need to be so harsh when he raises a valid question. Occasionally you see a crew member reading, or even eating during take off and landing. Lots of crew read during taxi/decent (particularly reading the PIL) but put any materials away for the take off roll/as we approach.

A PA book or the PIL seem the most likely things to be reading during take off and landing if it wasn't a newspaper/magazine etc.n
