hi , can anyone shed some light on what is required to pass OASC to become a load master.

i've already got loads of info and will be applying in the new year, but i'm worried about how much i need to know about current affairs.

I'm already in the RAF and i'm confident, fit and fairly good at maths but i dont know a lot about world issue . Is this going to cause me grief?

Yes.

But don't worry, neither does the Prime Minister or most of his cabinet. You'll pick it up as you go along. Start reading The Week ... it's ,er weekly at all good newsagents and some quite dodgy ones.

Not the best timing, as I foresee many NCA bums from Kinloss looking for seats soon, but Chinook manning never seems to catch up, so with the expansion, you may just be lucky.

Advice given to me over 20 years ago which helped me a treat :ok:

Pick a newspaper, broadsheets are best but not essential, and buy it daily.

Start an A4 diary with subject headings about all the hot topics as of today.

Read your paper from cover to cover each day and update your diary accordingly.

It will take you a good few months to get to the Cranwell stage and by the time you get there you will have a much better understanding with regards to global happenings.

What ever paper you choose learn the names of all the main correspondents as that used to be an all time classic question at OASC :ok:

Good advice to read the broadsheets, but any fool can do that. Formulate the likely topics (Climate Change, Eco initiatives, Defence Spending, role of NATO etc, etc,) into a case which you can present - do you agree with with the popular view or disagree? Construct an argument as to why do you agree or disagree. The interview panel doesn't give a fat rat's arse about your views on wetland conservation threatening the next nuclear power station, but they do need to see that you can hold and defend a view on such things based on rational (or even irrational) logic.

Get an up to date atlas of the world, political boundaries; and ensure you can point to all the RAF's current and recent holiday destinations. Don't forget Kosovo and Bosnia.
