Opportunities in Tanzania??

Hi All
Can those operating up in Tanz, please shed some light on the job market up there at the moment, did the search thing, but only came up with posts from 2004/5.
Looking at maybe trying to getthe nod from Northern Air or one of the similar operators up there, any idea on whether they are hiring, what the pay is like at the moment, what the requirements are and who are the good guys and the dodge outfits.
I have a South African multi Com/IF around 670hr total and around 80hrs twin time with a twin instructors rating grade III with about 220 hrs instruction time.
Does anyone have current contacts and their email addreses for the operators? Lookking for Northern Air's contact email especially.
Any info would be most welcome.

Coastal Aviation is pretty good but they only operate Caravans and 206's. They always seem to be looking for pilots.

At the time (1995) most of the pilot who manage to get a job there bought a ticket to East Africa and went on knocking doors. It is still probably the best way.

No idea if precision is hiring now, but certainly a good excuse as any to see serengeti and kilimanjaro... :cool:

I know we are looking for crew, just can't get a straight answer out of them as to when the interviews will be and when the next course will be. It all tends to be a bit last minute, I got hired and sent off to France for training on a weeks notice after I called up and asked them what was going on with the lastest batch.

Hi!

The best way to get a job is to show up with your training complete, and all your paperwork done. As in, you have your type rating, local license, etc.

The more stuff you need (type rating, sim training, license conversion), the harder it is to hire you. The local work permit is no big deal. If they want U, they will get you permit.

Right now in Kenya, there is a BIG shortage of MD-8x and DC-9 pilots.

Coastal is the biggest operator of small aircraft (Dar-es-Salaam). Auric Air in Mwanza, Air Tanznia, TanzAir (or something like that), are some others.

How do you go about getting your license converted? Is there something comparable to the FAA's FISDO? Would that be your first course of action rather than knocking on doors?

Do not worry, your future employer in Tanzania will take care of licence conversion and workpermits.
At least that was my experience with Air Excel in Arusha.
You have to pay upfront, but after everything is done they will reemburs you.

I flew in Arusha from 96-99 for Northern Air. I was thinking about taking a leave of absence from my current job and going back to Arusha to do some bush flying. It was an awesome experience flying in Tanzania. Couple of questions:

What's the job market like?
How long does it take to renew commercial and instrument?

I have a Tanzanian passport so work permit is not an issue. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Don't think it would take too long to renew your licence, not sure if there is a statute of limitations on licence's, for IR renewal, all depends on availability of examiners and an aircraft to do it on, what ratings do you have on your Tanzanian licence?

what does it take to drive them given previous experience of 3,700hrs on B732 and an ICAO atpl, what are the salaries like? Rating?

Hey Cowboy, I have a C206, B58 and a C402 rating. I'd be happy flying a single engine airplane. I dont need the multi time. Just doing it for the experience; ie bush flying. Does flying the Caravan require an IR? Thanks for your help so far.

Yep, in tanzania you will need an IR for the van.
