As it appears that this is not common knowledge, I thought I'd share this info, hope it may be useful for someone.

Tightslot says on the upgrade thread that upgradable tickets do not exist and technically he may be correct for pax without special arrangements with their airline, but for anyone interested and potentially travelling domestic in the USA, there are Y-UP and Q-UP fare class tickets that give domestic first class travel at heavily discounted prices.

Despite the economy class first letter and the -UP suffix, these are discounted first class tickets, but they look (at least at first glance, to the uninitiated) like coach tickets.

Here is a reference stating (incorrectly) that the pax will be upgraded at check in, a common misunderstanding leading to the misconcept of the 'upgradable' ticket. AFAIK, these are not available on international flights and on Europe airlines.
