Hi everybody,

May someone assist me with the translation of those numbers please?
Where is it explained in the book? I have never seen this kind of code so far (i'm currently on chapter 18).

The exact question is :

What would the code 01640428 tell you about the condition of the runway?

a) it's raining
b) it's snowing
c) braking co-efficient of 0.28
d) it's broken

many thanks for your help.

01640428

01 - Runway 01 (88 = all runways, 77 = 27R i.e. subtract 50, 27 = 27 or 27L)
6 - Slush (0 good, 9 very bad)
4 - The extent, think this is an error as it should be either 1, 2, 5, or /
04 - Depth of deposit: 4mm
28 - Braking coefficient 0.28

Great pictorial example of how to decode here: www.b737mrg.net/downloads/b737mrg_snowtammetar.pdf

This is a 'state of the runway' group for METARs - authority is WMO Pub.
no. 306 (Manual on Codes, Vol. I.1 (http://www.wmo.ch/pages/prog/www/WMOCodes/VolumeI1.html#VolumeI1), Regulation 15.13.6.
See amendment to this regulation via Corrigendum to Supplement No. 6. (http://www.wmo.ch/pages/prog/www/WMOCodes/AmendList_VolI1.pdf)

If in EUR then see also EUR FASID, Part III-AOP, AOP Attachments (http://www.paris.icao.int/documents_open/show_file.php?id=212) (5 Jun 09).
Attachment A.

For the 'SNOWTAM format' itself, see ICAO Annex 15 (http://dcaa.slv.dk:8000/icaodocs/Annex%2015%20-%20Aeronautical%20Information%20Services/), Appendix 2.

If this is a real question, it is about the information that is contained in a Runway State Message. Therefore, A and B can be discounted because that information is contained in a METAR. D has to be excluded because that would be mentioned in a NOTAM or on ATIS. Therefore, the answer is as Rapid Ron used to say "C or the longest answer."
