Hello !

Let's make sample case: I've single engine aircraft with EASA's TC and it is only VFR certified. I need to replace old crappy radio and I'd like to put new xponder with mode S. Do I need STC for both or just for xponder ?

thanks for reply ! :ok:

Unless the TC holder issues a Service Bulletin to install the equipment you'll need an STC.....

STC NOT required for either of these. Both these items can be fitted via EASA Minor change, which anyone can apply for, providing they have the required data to substantiate installation.

EASA Part 21 Design organisations can provide pre-approved change instructions (or approve minor changes internally) for you if you dont have the data required to substantiate the installation yourself.

Approving Garmins GTX328 to an EASA UK G registered light aircraft?

I know trig T31 has easa approval to put it in most light aircraft.
Is their anything similar for the 328 or do you need to apply for an EASA minor change for each instilation?

Any advice appreciated.

JL.

Some Part 21 DOA companies have a multi-aircraft approvals for transponders such as GTX328, 330 etc. Try lees Avionics at High Wycombe - they seem to do loads of minor mods and STCs from what IO-540 says..

Any qualified repair station can sell and install a radio certified for your aircraft by STC. As far as the TXPDR mode S - you will also need to have the Altimeter system certified at the same time- preferably by the same shop. I'm not sure of the reg as I have been out of GA many years but it was FAR 91.177. Manufacturers have their equipment STC'd for most of the aircraft made in the last 50 or so years.

The equipment manufacturers' STCs may be applicable for N reg aircraft but most FAA AML STCs are not accepted by EASA so individual approvals are needed for each aircraft. Transponders etc can be installed using approved data from an EASA Part 21J company - nearest equivalent to getting an 8110-3 from a DER. We don't have the FAA Minor change route in Europe where a logbook entry will cover a simple modification.

Basically FAA STC's do not have EASA approval.
(This is a separate route, expensive and is the usual BS!!:}
EASA have to reinvent the wheel!
I have STC's that have FAA applicablitly to one model aircraft and the EASA STC referes to other models.
I have also an FAA STC that requires an AFM ammendment and an EASA for the same equipment ( EPGWS by the same company!) that does not.

However that said there is a "grandfather" clause ( as opposed to Santa :) )

If you have an STC that was incorporated on an EU registered aircraft prior to EASA then it is automatic EASA approval. :ok:

Thanks for your comments so far.

The part 21 people in the Uk are charging just a little less than applying for a minor change. Its is ok but makes it a very expensive minor upgrade....:ugh:

Anyone have any more information on the FAA grandfather stc route, surley most of the avionics people want fitting into light a/c pa28, 172 etc. GTX 328, gns 430 were fitted in these a/c well before EASA was born?

:)

I see that topic is reborn :ok:

Chaps from my club bought the stuff before giving a just a second to think about the paper work. Now we have new and shiny radios and mode S xpdnrs but without papers other that form 1 from manufacturer of avionics :ouch: Some guy installed the avionics without CRS , to make situation worse the planes have EASA TC and are quite rare ( PZL-104 Wilga ) at least so rare that avionics's manufacturer don't have them in minor change list covering almost 500 types.

Is there company anywhere in the Europe that can make and approve minor change for such rare bird ? I couldn't find such company in country that made those planes :ugh:

Remember the good old days of the UK CAA minor mod? Lot easier.
Ericson - have a look on the EASA website for STCs previously approved. Also, don't forget that grand-fathered mods approved by a Member State pre EASA are also acceptable.
