Can anyone tell me when the UAS's were originally formed? I have a distant relative who claims that they existed in the early stages of WW2 but I haven't been able to trace anything that far back.

Those are not bases they were formed at, and many are currently elsewhere: the RAF website had a lot when it profiled London a few months back.
Look on http://www.durham.ac.uk/nuas for a history, and at links page you will find all UAS links in the country.
