View Full Version : Manpower Overstretch?

The total aircraft strength of the RAF is currently 1057. The total number of regular group captains serving in the RAF is 329. With one Gp Capt to every 3.2 aircraft, how can the RAF plead it is suffering from manpower 'overstretch'? (Raw statistics, perhaps, but very Treasury-friendly).

Well in Strike Command in 1970/71 we had more engineer oficers in Strike Command than (not aircraft) - engines! Plus ça change...

According to my nice glossy "RAF Today", I count about 220 sharp, pointy types, distributed amongst less than 20 sqns (no offence meant to any multi/maritime/helo/training peeps). Same brochure tells me we have more than 1700 of rank Wg Cdr and above - including 140 Air Officers. What do they all do? (answers on the back of a postage stamp please).

Alas Scup-U-Like, there is an enormous overstretch at the end that requires manpower. So long as those who must be obeyed are OK and have their heads stuck in the sand, Ostrich style, everything will look rosey to them.

Unfortunately, the overstretch is affecting those who make the difference - The pilots and their support. Pity we don't hold the purse strings, because even AG could see where real savings of the tax payers money could be made.

Scud,. .. .I think you will find that its a chiefs and indians problem as Ralf has hinted at, and I am sure it is not just a problem that affects the RAF especially in the age of Tony's WORLD polotics.

All these Air ranks and Group Captains wouldn't be so bad if a small number of them ever showed some leadership and management skills!!!!. .. .Ooooops, did I say that out loud?. .. .

It's an "I'm alright jack" attitude from their airships in the ivory tower. But then we all knew that, didn't we?.

Surely its not so much "overstretch", rather "bendover"?

Seven of Nine,. .. .There is a formula which enables you to calculate the correct number (N) of airships required to command an air force numbering (A) aircraft.. .. .N = (100/A) x k, where k = 1,400, so that . .. .where A = 1,000, then. .. . N = (100/1,000) x 1,400 = 140.. .. .Please calculate the values for N = A.. . . . [ 05 March 2002, 09:42: Message edited by: chippy63 ]

So if I have one aircraft, I need 140,000 Airships, and if I have no aircraft at all . . .. .. . . .. .Sven

Sven S,. .. .One aircraft= 140,000 airships: yes, that's the number. A multi-role aircraft indeed. . .No aircraft = no air force, presumably, so the formula is not applicable.. .. .N = A = approx 380, according to the formula.
