Tangoman,

I would suggest you read the thread started by art200380, titled "Truth about RAF life"
Take as much from it as you can, the advice is good for both pilots and nco aircrew.

Get as many visits as you can, ask as many questions as you can, and learn as much about the RAF as you can.

LM is one of the few flying jobs with a future, and for my money, one of the best.

Best of luck to you.

Hi Tangoman, try these links for some useful information...
http://www.rafodiham.co.uk/
http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafbenson/index.htm
http://www.airmenaircrew.freeserve.co.uk/frameset.htm (this one especially)

Best of luck. Most of the guys (and 1 gal) I've met doing the job loved it!

Good links.
Don't take too much notice of the Basic Pay numbers, they're out of date now.
Then again, if you want to join the RAF, you're not in it for the money!

In a nut shell I would highly recommend it. But you cannot pick your aircraft type, you must be prepared for rotary and fixed wing. You may want to visit some of the operational sqadrons and chat to the guys and girls who have recently gone through the training system, however one tip.....If you have the qualifications, why don't you apply for pilot. Try these links http://www.lyneham.raf.mod.uk/
or http://www.raf-lyneham.org.uk/index.html

Tangoman,

You will need to get in shape so start eating and drinking NOW!

Don't worry about the spelling, most of them can't; in fact if the RAF find out that you can spell you may be considered overqualified. Later, if you are thought suitable for Officer training they will send you on a reading and writing course (combined with the how to use a knife and fork and ironing a shirt course).

Memorise any swear words and filthy jokes you hear from now on, you will need those almost every day.

BTW, Don't forget to take up chain smoking.

Good luck!

Thanks Guys. The sites have provided me with a lot of information that I need. In response to those of you saying that I need to ask some questions etc. I have done some work experience with the loadies from 84 Sqn at Akrotiri. Also I have been in the cadets for the past 5 and a half years and I have been to alot of stations and camps so I do have a fair idea of RAF Life. Thanks and if there are anymore links then please post them.

Go round all the RAF Units that employ our wonderful branch. Drop a letter to all the Stations asking for a visit to fact find, not only enjoyable but worth major points at OASC. The news is that the qualification requirements are going to rise soon to 4 O levels or equivalent so get your application in ASAP. We are short of ALM and actively recruiting. The future is so bright in the ALM world new aircraft and new boys have had a huge pay rise. Good luck and if you really want it you'll have the time of your life.
