what do cargo planes carry?

Hi all. I'm interested in becoming a freight pilot. However, what kind of goods do freight pilot fly? do they need to take a dangerous good course first?

and also is it more demanding than flying pax?

Huge number of different things get transported by cargo plane. All commercial pilots do a dangerous goods course. Some pilots like transporting people and others prefer the cargo, as it doesnt get sick or drunk or cause problems (as long as it is secured properly).

I meant those GA planes like the cessna caravan. what kind of goods do they carry exactly? because I think they caarry too little payload and therefore not very efficient.

I think you should fire off a mail to FedEx post hast StudentATP, as they operate 200+ Caravan's in the US. I'm sure they'd be delighted to know they carry "too little payload" and are "not very efficient". Alternatively, you could engage brain before committing your thoughts to print.

You should also consider discontinuing using the term "planes" when referring to aircraft or, if you so please, aeroplanes.

Student ATP. As mentioned you carry all kinds of stuff. There is a thread at the top of the freight dogs forum about the strangest freight, read that to find out the variety of stuff that is trucked.

Given the thread starter's location, it's possible that English is not his (her) first language.

DG: depends. The airlines I have worked for give their crews a DG "awareness" course, basic stuff. Classes/Divisions/labels/segregation/how to recognize a package that is DG certified (UN 4G etc etc). That's about it. And about all that's necessary.

Yes, the cost per ton is much lower with a large aircraft, but not all markets will support a large aircraft, and those markets still require timely cargo service for perishables and other items like express mail. So for a remote location where timeliness or the availability of surface transport is an issue, an aircraft like the caravan is well suited to the task, even though the unit cost is higher.

You are correct, Nom. In fact I first learnt english when I started University. one day I was asked to translate and memorise the chemisty periodic table from chinese to english and that was a pain in the head.

Pilots who fly freight get paid more than other pilots.

they fly always at night. their body tells them that they'd better leave this job as soon as possible and go to sleep at night like normal people

I know that human brain does not like to function at night initially, but after a while, it will adopt to the new the environment. but I can see where you are coming from.

StudentATP: Freight pilots do not automatically earn more than pax pilots. Freight pilots do not exclusively fly at night.

Just a friendly heads up, the whole body does not function as it should when forced to stay up all night, and does not become conditioned to it in time. In fact it gets worse in my opinion. I dont fly, but have worked 12 hour shifts at night for more of my 25 years at work than days, most of it in aviation.

As for what the night prowling cargo only carry, anything that can be carried leagally, from toilet rolls to radioactive, subject to UN numbers and the ticket to do so.

Would I leave it for the daylight SLF lark? No not unless forced to do so.
