With such an obvious wealth of experience and an awesome outlook on life (keen sports prevention officer) my vote for the first eurofighter sqn boss goes to BEagle.

With his F4 time I think he is an ideal candidate and how can he possibly miss the opportunity to add another type to his list.

A great idea! BEagle you are a legend and get my vote. Is this the fifth decade you have flown in?

Trouble is, to get a high-profile job like that, you have to grovel - and I have not noticed Beagle doing much of that! To win the "creepstakes" you usually have to have been PSO to some Airship. Nice thought though. WE will keep our fingers crossed for you, BEagle!

No, my public - too long away from FJs and anyway, I only did about 500 hours on the F4 before our ways parted! Because I wasn't good enough, I freely admit.

Errr - first flew in 1966 as a cadet in the coal hole of a Vixen (thanks, OC 892!). Flew in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and now the 00s - so I gues that technically does make it my fifth decade-ish! Dribble, mumble, dribble.....

Not too much grovelling, you're right. Got 'advised' to curb it a bit on here, so prose is a bit more conservative these days. The old style was legally safe, but could perhaps be construed by some as occasionally being a bit too close to being contrary to good order etc....

EFA - 'Ever Fewer Aeroplanes', 'Ever F*cking Happening?', any other goes at a good TLA for the TypHoon/Bureaufighter?

(TLA = Three Letter Acronym)

I think BEagle would be an excellent choice for aircrew on the first EFA Sqn. He always posts with considerable knowledge and obvious experience. . .A man with his experience knows how important the integration of this new system would be into the RAF - particularly with regards to the difficult world of budgets and behind the scenes fiscal issues. . .I think the candidate would have to be more of a manager with a proven track record, as BEagle has, rather than an old school flying orientated type such as anytimebaby or 6nandneutral.

I'd appreciate your comments on these thoughts. I think a lively debate about what sort of character would be best for the highest profile job in the RAF could ensue.. .Ed W, feel free not to reply to me on this Forum, and, come to think of it, JJ John aswell.

AG, maybe we could soon see the day where a SQN boss doesn't have to be aircrew. If, as you suggest managerial skills would be more appropriate to this position than flying experience, will we be seeing you leading a SQN to war in the next few years? It would certainly give more hours to the boys and I'm sure that everyone would appreciate a boss who could fill in and auth their 1771's for them......

BEagle, mate!

Typhoon's s'posed to be so easy to fly that they could retrain F3 navs to fly it. So a man of your calibre.....

I hope that`s not a derogatory comment about F3 Nav`s there Jacko !!

Some of them are very good at the old flying business.

Beagle/Jacko,

Today at Asain Aerospace 2002, under the patient tutelage of one Keith Harley, I flew the Typhoon 'sim' through the valleys of Wales.

Take-off, gear up, climbing roll then mach 1.2 200' along the coast past a nuclear power plant(tried unsuccesfully to 'knife flight' between the 'stacks' thank god for crash inhibit :) ) Then into the hills and valleys for the real fun. Roaring up the sides of mountains at 500kts, when I finally managed to get it out of Reheat, rolling and pulling down the other side with Wailing Wendy intoning "Pull Up, Pull Up" is more fun than should be legal.....you lucky bastards who get to do it for real!!!!!!!.

Actually 'Wailing Wendy' gets a bit annoying after a short while and I asked if you would have to put up with the bitch in war?

"Well it IS set for 25' at the moment!"

"Ohh.... :) "

It is very easy to fly, I particularly liked the way the CRT screens change automatically to suit what you are doing. No flaps to worry about back at the field, just put the wheels back down and fly the HUD to touch down, and when you brake to a halt the park brake sets automatically and the screens pop up with what you need to turn off before hitting the bar for beer call, only about 5 items from memory. Having said that taking it in harms way will require some talent I would think......just perhaps not as much as the old F4s.

Keith you are a real gentlemen, thankyou very much for this afternoons fun!! :)

Chuckles.
