Ethiopian executives appointed in ASKY, Virgin Nigeria

Senior executives of Ethiopian Airlines were recently appointed to management positions in ASKy Airlines and Virgin Nigeria.

The board of directors of ASKY, the west African airline based in Togo, appointed Busera Awel chief executive officer of ASKY. In the course of his long career spanning close to 25 years, Busera served as vice president of Ethiopian Airlines and has occupied several posts of responsibility including: director - marketing and sales international as well as area manager - Gulf, Germany and Central Europe.

Asky was established in 2006 with a total capital of 120 million dollars. Ethiopian is planning to establish a regional hub in west Africa. Following the demise of Air Afrique, an airline owned by 11 west African countries, and its liquidation in 2001, Ghana International Airline, Nigeria Airways and Ghana Airways-Ethiopian have managed to command a lion’s share of the West Africa market. Ethiopian has been seeking to establish a regional hub in Lome and to fly Europe and Northern America. In 2005 it tried to buy a 24-percent stake Ghana International Airlines (GIA) for USD ten million.

Asky equity owners include the private multinational bank ECOBANK, two major development banks of the region, as well as South African investors.

In a related news, Kinfe Kahsai, Ethiopian strategic business unit Executive Vice President (EVP), has been appointed as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Virgin Nigeria. Ethiopian Airlines and Virgin Nigeria have a technical cooperation agreement. According to the agreement, Ethiopian will train Virgin Nigeria’s staff.

Virgin Nigeria was renamed Eagle after it broke off its partnership with Virgin Atlantic. Core staff of Virgin Nigeria were executives of Virgin Atlantic. Ethiopian plans to fill the vacuum created by the withdrawal of Virgin Atlantic’s staff.
