Does anybody know why it's good luck to be given a sixpence piece and then have it stitched behind a set of RAF wings on your no. 1s? Does it apply to navs as well?

It used to be standard in the days when sixpence was sixpence and there was such a thing as a sixpenny piece - not just for pilots but for aircrew brevets as well. It wasn't for luck as much as providing a more prominent centre to the brevet/wings. "If you've got it, flaunt it !! :D :D
