As one of the unfortunate individuals with a 38 yr point in march. I am entitled to collect the 5K (less tax) FRI 1. A buddy has recommended that I would be better registering for linkup instead. Anybody with experience of Linkup care to comment? The Innsworth help line has proved less than helpful on the subject(surprise surprise!) and I have no local P staff here to give any advice.

It all depends whether you wish to blow your cash on enjoyment or training. Remember, the 10K from link up is not affected by tax so you get your monies worth, your 5K gets taxed so you will end uo with 3K in your hand. I too have had this dilemma, but for myself, an extra 2.4K means an extra 4 years tied to the service. Tricky, only you (and smarties) have the answer.

I've already pretty much decided to stay to 38 pt, so there is little to choose between FRI and Linkup on that front. However, as I'm currently overseas I've had no contact with anyone who has taken linkup and wonder how it's working. On paper the 10K without the tax penalty looks better but if it is a right royal pain-in-the-ass to get the wedge the 3K in pocket may be better?

Any comments??

Can't fault link up. Works a treat and accounts staff very good at making prompt payments. You may get more money this way and it takes a load of your mind. Also you don't worry too much about doing that extra NDB approach just to get it right and get a first time pass at IRT.

Depends on your circumstances. If you have lots of military big jet multi time, then no. If you need to do an IR, that will come to more than the three grand from FRI1. Some 16 grand is actually put in your link-up account, but you only get yopur stickies on 10 of it. This is because the RAF pays the 40% tax for benefits in kind direct to the Inland Revenue on your behalf.

Thanks for the info guys, Seems to confirm that linkup will be a better option for me. I might need and extra NDB or two, Unless the examiner would rather see a couple of lag persuit rolls or some BFM!

I'm in a similar boat and have opted to take LINKUP. Hope that makes you feel a little better.
