My folks were driving along the R46 towards Ceres a couple of weeks ago; a route they have never taken. About a km off the road, in a field they saw an aircraft. Inspection through binos proved it to be a DC3, sans rudder, in light blue livery. A few kms later, in another field, they came upon another one.

Does anyone have any info regarding these aircraft and their history that I could pass on to my old man?

Many thanks.

Its amazing what you can see when there's hardly any traffic on the road!
I passed this way last week but only saw the one. This was about 10 km north of the game reserve which itself is just off of the N1.
Some gates in the area were marked as no entry and SADF which might give some clue as to why they are there

Haven't seen them, but from the location I suspect that they are the airframes used during survival training exercises.

Two derelict airframes, 6864 and 6884 were moved by road from Ysterplaat to Touwsriver about a year ago. There was some coverage in the news of the relocation.

Both aircraft had been upgraded to turbine engine status, but were then stripped for parts. 6884 was the last of the lend-lease aircraft delivered to the SAAF during WW2.

Was driving along the N1 last week a 'few' clicks N of these Daks; actually N of Pretoria about 10kms S of Hammanskraal Jct. Did a double take when I saw 6? DC3 fuselages about 100m back off the W side of the highway. No sign of them on Google Earth ....

Wondered if they were the ones that were grazing at Wonderboom?
