View Full Version : GOLDEN JUBILEE MEDAL

If this has already been discussed, apologies! Just to gauge opinion, does anyone actually care about the Golden Jubilee Medal? Although it looks very nice to have a red/white/blue ribbon on my No1s, so what if I’ve done >5 years service? I do like Queen Liz, and it’s nice that she appreciates us, but wouldn’t the money for creating several thousand medals be better spent on say, JRSLA? Being a junior rank, I’m more concerned about whether the boiler works in my WWII barrack block, and if it breaks down, is there enough money in the budget for the civvie contractors to fix it. Furthermore, I know the medal is a present from Her Majesty, but I’d rather get medals for actually doing something, like serving in Kuwait or some other operational theatre. Feel free to rip me to bits if I’m talking twaddle!

Well Smiffy, bearing in mind the monochrome dullness of the RAF uniform (RAF Dress Policy Cttee please note), an extra shiny, dangly thing can only give it a lift. If Phil the Greek can get a chestfull for marrying his wife, I'm bloody sure I deserve one in honour of HM's illustrious 50th Top tip: Wear your Golden Jubilee Medal in the decidedly tepid barrack block shower. That way, you'll get a a warm, fuzzy, patriotic feeling, while you freeze your nads off.

All good saying that smithy but i`ve only been 2 years or so and i have already served in the gulf, to be honest i feel a bit cheeted, not by those who sit in their offices and work but by the fact that i will still serve at least 7 years and be operational more than most people, and i would would like a new carpet for my room, it just aint going to happen,

2 TWU - Thought you'd qualify as a VR ? If a spacey reserve uniform like myself with 14 yrs (and they count Cdt service (!)) qualifies, why in hell shouldn't you with 32?!. .Personally, I reckon the criteria should be 'for those who have taken an oath...' (not the kind some might be thinking of... :) ) Anyways, that's how oi sees it, Oi'll get back to moi village.

If you'd spent virtually all your service career, brown nosing, kissing ar&e, fawning and being a sad git it really would matter if you got one or if you didn't.

SAC Smith - you are a wind up merchant - what do you fly because it's not a desk.

Oh dear, Thirteen-Twelve. I hope you're not insinuating that pilots are the only people in the Service capable of intelligent and original thought. There are some very bright people of all ranks, trades and branches out there (and then there's Admin Guru, of course)

Going back fifty years to when my Dad was a Three Badger Jolly Jack Tar, only one in ten got the original Coronation Medal and the Silver Jubilee was a lottery as well, so what's all the fuss about a Golden Jubilee one then? They might just as well change everybody's old black hatband into a red white and blue one with gold edges - much more appropriate and it would brighten up the drab uniform a treat.

By the way Smithy how come you get to live in modern WW II barrack blocks. We had to make do with 1920s ones when I were in. Outside Loos and a tap at the end of the line. Boilers? Pure bl**dy luxury, no wonder you've all gone soft!
