Cathay-Air China deal closer PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 19 October 2009
Negotiations between Cathay Pacific Airways Limited, Dragonair and Air China Limited for the establishment of a joint venture are closer to completion.

The venture will be set up on the platform of Air China Cargo, which has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Air China after the latter acquired the Air China Cargo shares held by CITIC Pacific Limited and Beijing Capital International Airport.

Air China wants Cathay Pacific Airways to place its freighter assets in Air China Cargo and take a 49 per cent stake of the larger entity.

The 400 fleet is about a 50/50 split between the PAX 23 (-2 parked) & FRTs 25 (-5 parked), there are approximately 190 PAX Captains and 180 out of seniority FRT Captains, so it appears if CX choose to offload their freighters to Air China they could offer a take it or leave it deal to the 180 out of seniority freighter Captains.

That way the new offshoot has a solid Command base where CX/CA can introduce cheap F/Os and future Captains as the 180 gain the seniority to come back to the CX PAX fold.

The Management could you "explain" how CX is going to pull this off? :E

...as the 180 gain the seniority to come back to the CX PAX fold...

If they are allowed back. Once under China rules... all rules are out the window. They have to ask permission from the government to retire.

Now it makes sense why we got freighter upgrades in seniority order, because we will no longer operate freighters at Cathay... :ugh:

This all links in with the 380 rumour, the drafting of junior 744 pax captains to the Airbus, the slow demise of the 747 and its replacement by the new triples on the Pacific. It will be interesting to see how many freighters will be sent to the Air China joint venture. The junior KA DECs argued that they brought the aircraft and their commands with them, so if the aircraft go?

Duo ready for China’s biggest cargo partnership

China’s Air China and Cathay Pacific Airways will set up China's biggest cargo joint venture in Shanghai next year. Air China will hold 51 per cent in the venture and Cathay Pacific will take the balance. The two carriers will provide the venture with 10 Boeing 747-400 jets.

from Air China Cargo website:

International Cargo Transport Ltd. of China has a fleet of 4 Boeing 747-200 freighters, 8 Boeing 747-400 passenger-cargo mixed aircrafts, and 60 aircraft that have enough capacity for cargo transportation such as the Boeing 747, 767 and Airbus 340.

So all of theirs are combi versions ... mixed pax/cargo.
I can't see these going to Shanghai...

So all 10 will be coming from Cathay; with a good 200 crew or so.

Is Shanghai within the rent-free zone? ;)

Why should they crew these A/C 's with expensive Gweilos? This well could be the start of an outsourcing process involving reduced expats..

Of course they won't.

They just fire the bottom 200 and post 200 vacancies in shanghai on a crap package. It just so happens that the bottom 200 is the 200 guys they need.

Oh, they are good. You must give them that.

Do you really think CX will crew the JV? I see Riskworth are already looking for pilots on it's website. Interesting.

By the way - 13th month will be our SLS paid back.

Which rumour do you believe?

Presumably as CX has many disfunctional 744 DECs, the 12k will only be applicable

What, exactly, are you inferring by that statement Krone?
