A jet trainer has crashed near RAF Valley in Anglesey.

The pilot managed to eject as the Hawk trainer jet crashed near the perimeter fence of the RAF base.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: "There has been an incident with an RAF jet during landing at RAF Valley.

"The pilot ejected. We do not know any further details at this stage. We are still awaiting further information."

From the BBC:

"An RAF pilot has ejected from a Hawk training jet before it crashed at a farm near RAF Valley in Anglesey, north Wales. The crash occured at around 0730 GMT Friday.

North Wales fire service sent two appliances from Holyhead and one from Caernarfon to the scene.

"The pilot ejected safely and was picked up and taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd, the hospital in Bangor, with back injuries," said a North Wales Police spokesman.

The plane came down in a field 50 yards from an unclassified road at Caergeiliog, narrowly missing a farmhouse.

North Wales Police said no-one else had been hurt.

Eye-witness David Gould told BBC Radio Wales he heard two loud bands and saw flames and plumes of smoke from the site of the crash.

"I was in a lambing shed and there were two bangs," said Mr Gould.

"One was like a gas cylinder going off, which might have been the pilot ejecting, and then there was another big bang which must have been the plane dropping down.

"My friend said to me that that was not a normal bang and we walked out of the shed and could see all the flames and flumes of smoke.

"About three minutes later, the emergency services were around," he said.

The pilot managed to eject as the jet crashed near the perimeter fence of the RAF base, revealed a spokeswoman."
