I try and eke a paltry supplement to my wages as an aviation artist, though not in the league of Turner, Trudgian, Wooton, et al.

I'm in the middle of a Lightning which is coming together rather nicely, but I need a couple of nice clear pics of an ass end on reheat. As an anorak aside I would quite like a short Mpeg of same.

I spent my formative years living near Warton and was therefore quite fortuntate to have seen the real thing, However, it was a long, long time ago.

can anyone help by either directing me to a website or emailing my surreptitious identity at [email protected]

Snapshot, I must say that plundering your website was, on this occasion, less than fruitful!

If you dont get anything more instantaneous, i have a couple of books from which i could scan some piccies onto CD for you.

Might take a couple of days though as I am well and truly in party mode for the rest of the year.

Email me if you want them

There are many pictures of the Lightning on the web, some of which should help you. Just use a decent search engine and use all the UK iterations of the a/c such as English Electric, BAC, Bae etc to avoid sites concerning the P38. Hope you find what you want.

But there probably aren't many good ones of the Frightning in full reheat - because by the time the photographer had composed, adjusted the settings and snapped, one of two things would have happened:

1. The ac would have vanished upwards at the speed of heat.

2. It would have run out of fuel!!

"Lightning - your target is 10 left range 30"
"Roger"
"Now 15 left range 10"
"Roger"
"30 left at 6. Any joy"
"Negative"
"Come hard port"
"Tally.....contact........MORE HELP!!"
"12 o' clock at 1 mile"
"Tally, Fox Two.......Chicken, RTB.!!....."

Hi mate, I did look at my library and have a few RH shots but none that I have had time to scan. I'm off to Cape Town on NYD, so busy trying to get my ladder packed! The photographs on the website are from an OLD scanner from 1998 andI have never had the time to replace them.
Regards to all on PPRUNE

Snappers

Ta - bring back some goodies. I'll email you a copy of my finished article for your professional opinion. I'm thinking about going to print eventually so I could use some advice in due course.

Safe Journey and keep of the Cape Red!

The "Frightening!" That is very good! The first time I was in the UK for an airshow was the Air Tattoo at Greenham Common in 1979 and whilst our coach was in a very long queue to gain admission on site a brace of Lightenings shot past overhead at about 1500 feet at very nearly close to the sound barrier - what a sight and sound that was for my first witness of fast jets! Great.

Could not resist a reply with my c/s!

The best Frightening display [inadvertant] for tears was Mildenhall -hmmm - I cannot remember the year, but the last year of service say mid 80's - there had been a ground display by a pair, but no planned flying. On the Sunday they decided to depart late PM after a storm had passed through; both took off and did a circuit and estimated .98 fast pass, with a *reheat* zoom climb to FL200 through a blue hole in an otherwise angry cb filled sky. Oh for a stonking telephoto!

I was in part taught to fly by a man who destoyed a runway when his rotate departure became a model ejection as the aircraft returned to the runway to destroy the [brand new] tarmac. I sometimes think it explains a lot!

Staxton Wold 85. The new Mayoress or Scarborough and other half are visiting the unit and the CO asks if a fly-by can be arranged. Single F6 up looking for TOO agrees - and asks if there are any restrictions, told none - and no press.

15 minutes later everyone is outside looking east. A small dot appears on the horizon descending and approaching rapidly. I looked at CO and he looked at me. We got a lot of these and knew what it normally looked like. This was way way too F*****g low and was vvv fast.

The F6 descended over fence ( about 10 ft high ) in total silence and rotated about 60 yards in front of us. Everything and everyone not bolted down ( Mayoress, CO, me, dustbins etc ) was blown away bouncing and rolling across the ground as the shock, heat and sound waves hit. From flat on the ground all that was visible looking up were the 2 glowing tail-pipes vanishing vertically as he twinkle rolled away into the sky.

Mayoress, thankfully, thought it was brilliant.

And what about Pete Stone as the last Lightning to leave Gutersloh! The longest time ever for the burner to light, so lots of alpha and v little thrust wobbling over Handbrake House. Met at Binbrook by diverted helo to RTB for b*LL%Ģing. Waited many weeks (with only the diversions of sun, cheap booze and six foot tall blonde German babe) for slap on the wrist from AOC and punishment posting to Sims - for not very long until 5 were short of Lightning drivers. Subsequently bought the farm in a Harrier - wot a great bloke!
