Just thought I'd start a new thread. What's the worst/best station you've had the fortune/misfortune to be posted to?

Worst: V****Y Why: Viet taff

Best: Marham Why: Didn't know any better.

Now where's that cup of milky cocoa gone.... :p

Well the best has to be St Mawgan when the NigNogs were still there. Lots of nice girlies, wonderful beaches and a 24 hour scruffs bar!

The worst is Brize because it's the home of the RAF Movements school!!!!!

Worst? Base Aerea Gringo, Islas Malvinas for its sheer pointlessness...

Best? Either Scampton before CFS got there or, of course, Chivenor!

12th Nov 2001, 01:54
The best has got to be from a few years ago, Sek Kong, friendly small base and a fistful of HK$'s to boot :D

As for the worst, I am among the people who vote for Mount(Un)Pleasant, luckily only there on over nights with the "Queen of the skies" L1011!!!

BTW whats this about the ex Delta -500's being offered for the FSTA freightdoor/wingpods fitted etc?

Linton!!!! York's a magic night, London less than 2 hrs on the train....a hell of an improvement on anywhere in Lincoln as far as entertainment goes. Actually who goes to Damon's? Magic...and the Pie Shop...as for York, the fact that you can get a roll and egg to eat in The Gallery while you chase blart gets my vote! Sheer class.

hmmm

By worst i'd say RAF Cosford. its a **** hole. I went to cadets there for 5 years, and had to put up with squady's for most of it.

By best i'd say Conningsby. Poiny jets and old classics. its like a living museum!!

Best is most definitively Leuchars- St a's in all it's glory (if you can handle lots of 20 ish yank girlies hankering after Wills!).
Worst (that I've been) Coningsby- Lincs is flat and sticks of chicken stuff; while Lincoln itself is improving it is still an hour to get there and more than my flying pay is worth for the taxi.

Best - Linton-on-Ouse: York is a great night out and there are lots of nurses. I remember a particularly cute one looking after me at the General when I broke my arm.

Worst - Conningsby. It's dull, flat, boring and it takes 1 hour to get to the road out of Lincolnshire. "Deliverance" country, too. "Squeal like a ig, boy"...........

I can't believe that HMP Kinloss has only got one vote as the worst base. Take me back to Blighty any day.

It doesn't help that Kinloss is a seperate Air Force in it's own right, still fighting the Russkies in the Cold War.

As for the best: - Waddo (with Finningley, as a stude, a close second - but that was another thread!)

spekesoftly

Best - Akrotiri in the early seventies. Based aircraft included Lightnings, Vulcans, Hercules, Argosy, SAR Whirlwinds, USAF U2. Frequent detachments of Nimrods, Canberras, Phantoms. Scheduled services courtesy of VC10s and Britannias. The climate, the food, the wine........

Best FTS - Linton, late sixties - five JP squadrons. York pubs were good, even then.

Somebody had to say it...
Best:Colt! Its' reps right, it's small, friendly and now relatively busy. Nch is a fantastic night out, not too many trolls and the beer's not THAT expensive, honest!
Worst:Marham! Is it me or is everyone there clinically depressed?
:D :D :D

Things are always worse than they seem!

Most of the best stations are long gone, and many of you weren't around to serve in the best of the best: Royal Air Force Station Eastleigh. Just four miles from Nairobi, on the equator but at 5'600 feet ASL, a beautiful climate.

Following the posts of spekesoftly and Samuel, I would offer Oakington and Thorney Island as extinct favourites. I gather that Norfolk's OK if you like doing your own thing :)

Ah TI, the Royal Air Force's own Butlins on Sea, sailing club 2 mins walk, beach 8 mins, work 10 mins. Speed trails at weekends with E.R.A.s and Cammeron Miller at weekends. Goodwood just down the road, fast trains to Waterloo or slow ones to Brighton. Even Commander Crabbe came to visit!

For the record of dull Lincs Kirton in Lindsay would take some beating, a one pub village somewhere near Sculthorpe!

Good job the swinging sixties followed the frugal fifties.

Correction, Sculthorpe was home to mighty B47s where naughty ops started from. I meant the place in Lincs with an N in place of the L which as Beagle has pointed out the censor wont let us type.

Worst: Lossiemouth, it's an ongoing ex-Bucc mates spoof to say its a great station, it isn't....although the flying is great.
Best: Leuchars by a long way, grat flying, great social life and not too far from God's country......too much fun, must be time to close it !!!

Best in the UK has to have been Chivenor. Germany - Gutersloh. Med - Luqa.

Worst? Manby - so you think that Coningsby's remote? Marham comes a close second.

Been said before but if this is a vote:

Worst: Marham. Permanent depression centred over that part of Norfolk, smells of sugar beer and Kings Lynn.

Best: Coltishall. RAF's best kept secret.

If "retrospectives" are allowed, the best in UK were Little Rissington/South Cerney when they housed CFS. Numerous charming pubs with cotswold ales; Cheltenham for a good lech, and the big smoke a couple of hours up the old A40 (used to do it a damn sight quicker than that in my old TR3 coming back early on Monday mornings). Overseas, Nicosia in the '50s and, as Samuel points out, Eastleigh. We had a couple of chaps down there on detachment flying Harvards against the Mau Mau (ha! ha!). I felt it my duty as their Flight Commander to visit them from time to time (4 stages in a Meatbox: Abu Sueir - Wadi Halfa - Khartoum - Juba - Eastleogh). The Eastleigh Mess was wild during the emergency. You had to watch your manners with the ladies because many of them were packing .32 pistols in their handbags, and one guy got himself shot. If I remember, Samuel, there was a sort of ravine between the mess and the hangars. Some chaps were walking the footpath from the mess to the hangars after breakfast one morning, nursing the usual hangover, when they were confronted by a lion. Quickest hangover cure you ever saw! :D :D :D

...just spent a day in nicosia, sipping brandy sours while the good lady destroyed the credit cards. Came home and took children to the beach for an hour. It might be Nov, but it's boilin'. Should be able to fit in a quick ski up Mt Olympus soon as well, before flying around in my classic machine, admiring the scenery and watching the dolphins. RAF Akrotiri - sh*t for your career, but great for your life.

Worst...Valley - Mt Pleasant with less culture.

RAF Little Rissington always seemed to hold a special magic (I suppose it was the nearest RAF Camp to my home) and I actually enjoyed begging trips in Vickers Varsities (remember them eh!)there as a Space Cadet. Other good ones were RAF Thorney Island and Gaydon(also as a space cadet) More recently, I've enjoyed RAF Church Fenton (Lovely Camp but too many trips into York led to marriage!)Akrotiri (a little empty in my time, it must have been amazing in the 60s and 70s) and RAF Halton (well it does have an airfield (and they trusted me to fly there)and a mess that doubles up as a fim set (See the Bond film tomorrow). Worst ones: RAF Hereford (but in a nice part of the World) and, difficult for getting to know people BZN (but it got better when they found out that I did the resettlement interviews!) I guess places are what you make them all are worse for fewer blue suits. :)

Dull and Wet(that's just the locals) and surrounded by peat!

Best Place - RAF Strawberry. Far enough from Shrewsbury to keep the size of the doormat a reasonable size and excellent beer/mexican.

All Crab bases are @rse apart from toast 24/7

Worst: St Mawgan - having once been at Culdrose, anywhere west of Exeter falls into this category.

Best: ??Clueless??

Worst is a toss up between Sealand and Hereford.

I`m with EESDL but which Mexican are you talking about? Am I missing something?

Best overseas Gutersloh cause we had a job to do and we did it well. The job did not entail being a pawn for Tony`s army.

There must be something good about Aldergrove, but blowjob Jill left a long time ago  and I cannot think of anything else, apart from top biking roads with Mr Honda.

Worst - Kinloss, ****ed around 24/7 by 18 Gp and the Navy. 5 hour drive down the A9 before civilisation and surrounded by lifers who thought Kinloss was the centre of the world.

Best - Chivenor in the early 80s Mon-Fri 9-5 (plus a little night flying) great flying with blunty hours. Ugly mess but the girls from Croyde Bay weren't worried about that.

I can't believe we're on page 3 of this thread and no-one has mentioned the holy station of Finningley! (A little silence for the long departed). 70p on the bus from the Staish's house to the first pub and lots of ladies. OK, so I'm biased as a Nav, but I've heard pilots and even SNCO aircrew who had to endure the cr*p of AAITC talk fondly of the place.

For me Best is a tie with Chivenor in 83ish to Wildenrath in 84-88 ish. Wilders was magic-cheap ale, excellent hooligan flying, and we all thought we had C***s 12 foot long 'cos we flew F4s. I also had a great time at Leeming in the 80s-90s and an OK time at Conningshole (dont want to go back tho')

This obsession with Arthur Scargill International Airport, People's Republic of South Yorkshire is definitely a navigator thing. Best station - Gutersloh by a mile. Managed 2 tours there. Great social life, loads of horny teachers gagging for it and outstanding beer. Possibly the location of the best RAF Officers' Mess ever (built by the Krauts of course). What a dump it is now the brown jobs have got their hands on it.

Worst station - Brawdy by a mile - the fisheads knew what they were doing when they legged it from that *@&%hole.

Best- How about Tengah in the early seventies, Tiger Tops, slant-eyed maidens, food to die for almost given away and sun, sun, sun.
Worst-Kirton-in-Lindsey (ITS in the late 50's) Cold, foggy, poor, shouted at from morning to night, only entertainment was steely S****horpe apart from duty cadet checking the Iraqi course at lights out for the number in a bed.

But was Tengah's sun, sun, sun conducive to the spritely performance of that underpowered ground-gripper time-expired nuclear bomber turned tanker that you used to fly then, Art F?

Were the Boulton Paul Defiants still at K-i-H when you were there? Notice how the nannying naughty word checker didn't like 'Sc unthorpe'? Well - at least it has some taste! Wonder whether it'll allow 'Stwathorpe'?

Gutersloh was brilliant. The open air swimming pool was a super asset. Shame the Army filled it with concrete! That very expensive new sports centre - mothballed, I believe. What a waste.

Aldergrove ... well I just deleted what I really think about it. The mortarproofing on the windows was an interesting feature I can live without. If you enjoy confined atmospheres, fine. I don't.

Beags - the Donny girlies with the rubber skirts must have really upset you. Not the first time you've mentioned them. How many times did they turn you down?

I've never worn any rubber clothing (sounds a tad sweaty)! Knew a husband swapper at Lyneham who did though, eh Nat! Jean Poole sends her regards :)

Hmm, Tengah during ANZUK days; a substantial number of antipodeans socialising in the bar at lunch-----which extended to well after 6:00pm. Non-antipodean PMC muttered 'soto voce'about shorts not to be worn after 6:00pm. Not all of them dropped their shorts, but those that didn't were too incapacitated by laughter!

Desert Crash
17th Nov 2001, 12:06
Have passed through Singapore in the late 80s but was a shadow of its former ANZUK self. Talkng about bases, Hobsonville near Auckland took a lot of beating. Officers' Mess was a large house built near the water's edge with views of sparkling blue water and palm trees and the old flying boat ramp was ideal for launching all manner of boats. Grass airfield used by helos but I understand it is to be sold for executive housing (Plus ca change!).

Worst? Well, both are Welsh - there's Sealand (a dump) and St Athan (a bigger dump). And they speak funny. At least no ac have been based at Sealand in lving memory.

TheWelshOne
17th Nov 2001, 12:37
Sealand - now there's an idea - how big is the airfield? Sealand is crap itself but good for Chester, Manchester etc.

Valley - sad to say it has gone down hill since Oct!

See ya boyos

Desert Crash
17th Nov 2001, 12:59
Sealand is unlikely to remain an RAF site for much longer. East Camp is part of DARA and South Camp is primarily DCSA (therefore part of the DLO empire!). Plus there's a few pesky problems about disposing the airfield. Perhaps a future SH force base, then? The hunting's not too bad locally and Chester is pleasant. The Arkle in the Grosvenor is a nice restaurant, too.

Art Field, I had forgotten about the Iraqis (though we trained who would now be their top air force brass)when I nominated Kirton in Lindsey for worst. For me they were not a bonus entertainment, living in the same barrack block and having to listen to that everlasting wail of arab music from the other floor. Beagle by that time K i L boasted only a station flight of 1 Anson & perhaps a chipmunk.

Samuel
17th Nov 2001, 16:47
Desert Crash, Hobsonville is indeed closing, with the Iroquois moving south, and yes it is a beautiful spot for a Mess.Someone with a bag of loot will no doubt convert it back to the large house it was originally. The airfield of course is prime real estate, and will be sold.

RAF Changi was an interesting place after the RAF left. The embryo Singapore Air Force hired QFI's from the RAF, RAAF, and RNZAF for the purpose of IFT on their Marchettis. One Aussie was in his mid-40's and had never had a desk job!I think there was at least one who had flown Hunters in both the RAF and the now defunct Royal Rhodesian Air Force. Some were seconded, and others wore Singapore uniforms.

Well, the story I heard one night was that, during the detachment of Javelins to Entebbe(?)whose purpose was to contain the RRAF should IAN Smith fall foul of the British Govt. (which he did of course, making a unilateral declaration of independence),the pilots of both the RRAF, many of whom were of course ex_RAF, and the Javelins had regular meetings to discuss tactics!

Ian Smith himself was an ex_RAF Spitfire pilot.

Nice to see I'm not the only one to think that Leeming is a hole. Never actually been there ever when it was dry, mud-free, sunny, warm or even mildly pleasant. However, saved from complete disaster by the presence of the Free Northumbrian Air Force (NUAS) and a good bunch of F3 jocks.

Still, you service boys ought to count yourselves lucky - ever been to Kidlington???? At least you have something to do, and armed guards to keep the six-fingered banjo players at bay!!!

I just have to concur that Gutersloh was the best - in the days of the English Electric wonderjet, before the press-up mates moved up the road from Wildenrath and started the inevitable decline into the brown-job disaster that it has become today.

There was a brilliant Officers' Mess with plentiful cheap beer and a lifestyle embracing all the duty-free benefits. Numerous schoolies' parties: Sennelager, Osnabruck, Munster, Mansergh Barracks etc, etc - and I was still a batchelor. Happy days!

In the UK I was fortunate to do a UAS summer camp at Thorney Island just before it closed. I can see why the fun detectors targeted that station. I'm amazed that Coltishall has lasted this long!

19th Nov 2001, 16:31
Best: Bruggen in the early 70s. Brilliant fast jet, plentiful duty-free (booze, cars, hi-fi), schoolies on base and nurses just down the road at Rheindahlen.
Second best: Chivenor in the early 70s. Brilliant fast-ish jet, drinking to survive the course, but a dirth of crumpet.
Worst: DOAE, West Byfleet by a country mile. OK, so it wasn't an RAF station, but it was the pits of a place for a ground tour. No mess, no mates, just scientists.

Not convinced by Warthog 11's love of Nellis on a Friday night. It was good enough, but who wanted to stick around the O Club with Las Vegas on your doorstep?

Please allow an ex-pongo a view.
1. Wildenrath in the seventies, definitely the best (and that is speaking as enlisted s**t, can't speak for you orificer johnnys!!)
2. The best is a relative term...all RAF bases are better than any army bases.
3. Of course Gutersloh is S**t now that the army is there. The vehicles are in the aircraft hangers and the helicopters are on the peri track, but what do you expect, you shouldn't have bu**ered off, should you? :)

Have to agree with Blacksheep's proposal of Changi - I spent a very happy childhood there. Having revisited the place since, it's nice to see that Singapore's Armed Forces are putting the place to good use, although sadly many of the original RAF buildings are now decrepit because they lack air conditioning - in fact the saddest thing to see was that the Lloyd Leas MQs are now used as a punishment centre for druggies: No Air Conditioning = Harsh Punishment in today's Singapore!

As to my own service, I was happy at Newton, but very cold in the wartime Nissen huts St Mawgan then used for visiting officers - it was enough to drive a man to the bar, fortunately!

If I may be allowed to go back more than a few years.

The best by a country mile, Tangmere.
Reasonably close to London, all the south coast at hand, great spirit and competition between squadrons.

Best by a long way - Binbrook, the forgotten flying club. It was home to the Lightning that was there to defend Binbrook. Everybody knew everybody and a really friendly place. SAC Scott Dodd (FLM)used to play as on of the pilots whenever we had a new SEngO on 11 Sqn - Took a week on average to cotton on! Xmas present was a Mk 3 with no belly tank fitted Yee Haa!!

Worst by far - Valley. My wife has only seen the place once and has threatened to divorce me if I ever get posted there. Can't say I blame her, it's the carbuncle on the backside of humanity! Hapiness is Anglesey in the rear view mirror.
