Jeppesen approach chart protectors

Hi Guys/Girls

I have been looking for some Jepps chart sleeves/protectors. Seems the online pilot shops are asking on average around $15 for 10. $1.50 per sleeve seems fairly steep. Jepps AU want about $18 each(pack of ten). Any ideas on where to get cheaper or an alternative? The jepps binders seem to be a unique 7 ring design.

I just went to a stationary supplier and bought A5 plastic sleeves cost was around a $1 each. If you want you can punch holes in them and put them in your folder. I just leave the sleeves out and put the appropriate chart in them as required, works well and saves the charts getting ripped up.

These guys charge $35 US for a pack of 50. I like to buy localy when I can but all the Australia stores just take the piss with their prices.

I made the mistake of buying the locally made rubbish. They are thicker, less flexible, and produce more glare.

The genuine article from jepp are by far the best value for money.

My advice is don't bother buying them. They are too heavy to sit properly in most clip holders with the covers on and they make your binder heavy and thick. The look rubbish when they get old too.

I should mention I haven't actually bought anything from Sporty's (I was just planning to soon) so I can't vouch for them.

You can get A5 sleeves designed for binders (with the white part with holes punched in it down one side) from most newsagents or stationary/office supply shops. From the same place you should also be able to get ring clips, or if you want just a plain A5 binder to hold them all together. I keep checklists, TAC/ERC and various useful notes in mine as well.:ok:

If you look about you can purchase a hole punch to suit the jepp pages. I found it quite handy for other info pages that you want to keep in the folder. Also a one inch folder is good to keep your regular stuff in and handles the covers well. Get the real thing from the States; more than worth it.

I've used Jeppesen protectors for 10+ years now, and am only just having to replace them due to wear & tear.

Finding on-line prices in Aus at $14 to $22 per 10 pack, I've just ordered 100 from Sporty's for USD$34 (AUD&39.04 according to iConvert) plus USD$14 for the international shipping.

I keep an A5 binder with all my common visited places. In that binder I have A5 sleeves with all the charts in each one for a particular location labelled such as Perth in one Darwin in the next etc. I have a copy of the company flight and duty exemptions quick reference items for the aircraft and memory joggers for certain items.

I then locate the chart when required and whack it in a jep chart protector which I keep a few in each sleeve on the most used charts such as the ILS/DME arrivals.

Works for me but you will work out what works best for you over time.

beaverlover, you will notice that your jepp binders rings match up with some holes on the elcheapo plastic sleeves you can get from Officeworks. Next get a grinder (and someone that knows how to use one) and grind off the extra rings. TA DA - now you have a jepp bnder that holds cheap plates and the individual jepp plates.

$10 will get you a box of 100 A5 sheet protectors from Officeworks.

Get a few small key rings and use them to bind it all together. You can then write in your winds with permanent marker and easily clean it with some methylated spirits.

Works a treat for me and much more cost effective.

in my opinion use the jepp stuff. at night with chart/map lights on the officeworks stuff you will get 'chart glare'. also if the protector is not fitted correctly i have seen 'chart blur'.

like claret i have been using jepp protectors for 10+ years and going strong.

jepp make them for pilots officeworks make them for office girls.

The local prices are very steep. Also, if you are silly enough to leave them in the car on a hot day 10 jeppesen sleeves will fuse into one very heavy piece of plastic... along with the charts within... :rolleyes: :(

Australian standard size paper is A4 (210mm X 297mm) half that size is A5 (148mm X 210mm)
US standard size (the home of Jeppesen) Is 'Letter' 8½ by 11 inches (exactly 215.9 mm × 279.4 mm) half that size is what Jeppesen use 8½ by 5½ inches (exactly 215.9 mm × 139.7 mm).

So there are three different options:

As a few of the guys have said go to office works buy a $5 A5 binder and spend if i remember rightly about $15 for a pack of about 100 A5 plastic sleeves. Works fine I have used this for a few years. However the tops of the charts stick out a little (we are talking a couple of mm) and width wise the plastic sleeve is too big. Obviously not a big issue, but some people like things to fit right.

This leads to the next option:

Find an online US equivalent of Office Works and order their 8½ by 5½ inches plastic sleeves. Your Jepp pages will fit perfectly into them. At the same time you can buy a binder to match or find a 3 ring A5 binder here (not an easy task) but they will fit perfectly into three of the seven holes on the side of these plastic sleeves. These plastic sleeves will fit into a Jepp binder but as they have the extra bit at the side for the holes they will hang out the side of your Jepp binder, look stupid and cover any dividers you have.

The final and most expensive option is to buy the proper Jepp style sleeves, where the hole punches on the sleeve line up with holes on your Jepp chart. Effectively the your Jepp chart is only at most a mm wider and taller, thus fitting nicely into your Jepps binder and looking very smick.

The final option will obviously make you a better pilot.

I'm sure that he won't mind me saying that I PMed him (or maybe her...) to follow up on this product. Apparently the Sporty's version are not up to the standard of the Jeppesen version and not worth the money saved.

Avery make 7 hole half letter sheet protectors as well as binders to put them in. You can't buy them in Australia that I know of but they are on line. Finding a shop in America willing to send them to you, particularly without adding $20 or $30 for postage would be the real challenge though.

I bought my Jepp 7 hole punch from Skylines at MB. Remember that Jepp charts are about 5mm thinner than A5, so when you move to an Electronic subscription & print charts, they don't fit the protectors.
