Graves at RAF Coltishall

Does anyone know anything about the rumoured burial site within the boundaries of ex. RAF Coltishall? Are they war graves or something more ancient?

Dr Boff - have a look on Google for RAF Coltishal. Loads of photos there including one of the graveyard.

Being computer illiterate, I wasn't able to attach the photo, but have included the accompanying text from it. I'm sure with a bit of digging you'll find out much more detail.

Someone is currently writing some history on the base, so in due course I think it will all be on the website.

A little further down this road you'll see a brick building on the left. This is a graveyard (M) which I think is worthy of a bit of your time. The gates are closed but not locked, so in you go and walk past the brick building, and pay your respects to the young men of many nations who fought and died and enabled us to hang around this RAF station watching aircraft as a hobby. The large cross marks the end of the well-kept war graves and the beginning of peacetime RAF graves.

RAF Thorney Island has an incredibly beautiful graveyard dating back over 200 years, with very neatly tended military graves and a German wargrave section of about 19. It overlooks a creek with the Chidham peninsula the other side. A better final resting place could not be found. I think it must be common for RAF stations to have a cemetery attached.

Access is restricted as the site is an army base now. One needs a good excuse or a pass to get there!

Could not the original question refer to all the equipment that was buried on site at the end of WW2? If they grey matter serves me correctley was an excavation started a few years ago reputedly revealing a Merlin engine? Don't want to start the hares running but thought it worth asking.

dr.boff. In my photo below I have highlighted the position of the 'known' burial site at Coltishall, mentioned by others, (outside the perimeter) should this not be the site you refer to ! do you know the position 'on camp' of the one refered to in your post ?

Brokenlink- yes I've heard that too. Was the Merlin you're referring to the one wrapped in brown greasy paper that disappeared mysteriously?

Keith- I had heard that there might be a cemetery on base, but wondered if anyone was able to substantiate this?

Hi, don't know if you found the information you're after but I've been informed that there may be Polish pilots buried within the airfield perimiter during WW2.
