Vista home premium, have the following when trying to install nvidia drivers for geforce 9500GS graphics card - Windows could not load installer for display.
Have uninstalled and tried reinstalling, latest and previous drivers, no matter what it keeps coming up with this. In device manager there is an exclamation mark against the card in other devices/video controller (vga compatible).
Have searched but can't find anything, any help/ideas most welcome.

Be sure the bios is configured correctly. If it is, then get rid of it completely I.e. uninstall it, plus driver, uninstall any associated software, run cc cleaner or similar to cleanse the registry, remove all folders including hidden folders (there will be one) in program data & try again.
If it still won't go in, try it in compatibility mode. Nvidia installs can be fiddly & they do leave tendrils around the system. Sometimes they're just dogs - I had an Nvidia 7300gs which was just a pig under any configuration, but I've not heard negative stuff about your card.

you might also try reseating the card (taking it out, putting it back) and making sure all your ram chips are firmly socketed as well.
Make sure you dont have any disk errors, I've often just renamed the folders where some files were (so that any possible bad sectors they occupied STAYED occupied and werent reallocated) and then reinstalled
If you have a backup card or a second card, you may benefit from booting w/o the card then shutting down and reloading with the card.
do you have all the latest service packs for vista? are you running anything else? the (!) Beside a device usually is some address conflict

Have you got the .net framework installed?
ISTR that the Nvidia driver requires that for installing these days.

.net installed, tried the software clean, compatabilty mode wizzard keeps crashing so won't work, BIOS appears ok.
Interestingly the nvidia detector doesn't detect the card now either, will try removal/reseating later.

Interestingly the nvidia detector doesn't detect the card now either, will try removal/reseating later.I can assume .. if the card is not well seated .. your monitor will have no signal and will appear a error message on the screen "No Signal .. blah blah"
I take for granted as the drivers you are trying to install are for your card and your OS.
Also try in the device manager to delete the hardware entry for your graphic .. save and restart your PC.
OS will detect the card at start (usually) ..but you must refuse the OS to install drivers if proposed and after you can install yours.

actually the failure profile is a lot less 'binary' than that and with an improperly seated card (or memory chip) you will see your problems arise seemingly randomly or when certain programs or operations within programs are done. -

Just wondering what graphics card you had in previously.
I remember having a complete nightmare when I changed cards from one NVidia series to another once (integrated MB graphics to card). Driver refused to install due to the old card driver still being present. Ended up having to go into the registry and changing the permissions on the graphics key to allow my admin account to install.
I encountered similar prob when I upgraded my graphics card, it turns out that some of my Win services are disabled. Make sure all the required Win services are enabled before installing, like DCOM and driver related services, as they are required for some unkown reasons.
click start > run > services.msc and tick those stuff which you think are required.

Graphics card is the one that came with the pc. Anyway, after reseating everything, uninstall/reinstall etc etc.
Started getting a few other funny things going on, couldn't open regedit, sfc etc.
Did a back to day one install of vista and now everything seems to be working again, just a pain reinstalling and setting everything up again. I'm not 100% sure but this may of occured at an update, not sure which one, for vista.:eek:
