Dunsfold 2009

A few shots from a cold and windy day at Dunsfold.

Unfortunately, several items were lost due to the UK Weather, including a Hunter from Kemble and the BBMF. Despite the presence of the Vulcan the highlight of the day was the OFMC Spit and Mustang flown by Brian Smith and Alistair Kay who were just superb.

No apologies for the Vintage racers, the first is powered by the same engine as the Curtiss Jenny, whilst the modified Bentley is powered by a Napier lion.

Great photographs. I note that the North American B-25 has the markings of the 320 (Netherlands) Squadron 232511, N5-149. Is this the original aircraft once operated by 320 (Netherlands) Squadron? Which I believe would have operated from Dunsfold during 320's stay at Dunsfold 1943/44.

Unfortunately the B25 is not an original Dunsfold machine, however its great that the organising team for the display book the Dutch B25, as its a very fitting tribute to all the B25 crews who were based at the airfield.

The 'Reds' had come directly from a display in Poland, they had the managers Red 10 plus a spare. I had seen ten before but never eleven.

Thanks for that Batchy. One of my earliest aeronautical recollection circa 1944 was watching the B25s flying over our house in Tisman's Common some 4 miles from Dunsfold.

Did the Reds fly directly from Poland? I only ask as their website says that they were due to stop off at Manston first.
However, given there was the SU-27 crash in Poland I don't know if they got out on schedule so maybe they did fly direct?
Not really important, just being (nerdy) curious. ;)

Have definitely seen 11 Reds at Biggin Hill in 07, maybe at RIAT too, but wasn't counting then. :}

Good pics though, clear and sharp on a day that wasn't good for photography. :D

Great pics - you must have been near me (and the crew from The Cricketers in Dorking). What a shame that the Vulcan didn't point it's exhausts at us with it's taps open. My Cannon's battery failed after ten pics, so thanks for yours.

Looks as if the Grob in the first photo is being flown from the right hand seat. I wonder why?

Great pictures, Batchy. I can only echo your comments re Alistair Kay and Brian Smith in the Mustang/Spitfire duo. At Rougham they were the best pairs I'd seen for many a day. I told Mr. Kay that at Duxford yesterday. and he was genuinely surprised that someone had taken the trouble to tell him so!!!.
