Training session duration?

Please excuse my ignorance, buuut. I work as a Tutor Train Driver in Australia (I teach people how to drive suburban trains). There are many parallels with the aviation industry and as "safety leaders" more and more of our training has its roots in the aviation industry. Hence my questions. Is there an optimum time for a training session say in a simulator. Possibly an industry standard for a training session?

Every sim session I have ever done has been 4 hrs long , with one half for the Capt and the other for the F/O usually with a 10min or so break in the middle. Don't know if there is a reason for the length or if its just the way it is!
