I am trying to use Outlook in conjunction with an IMAP email account at Fasthosts.

Their guidance says that the server settings for the incoming server are imap.mydomain.co.uk and that the outgoing server should be the details provided by my ISP, so I am using smtp.mail.yahoo.com for this. I am receiving incoming mail OK but cant send.

I don't understand why I should use the BT outgoing server details as I also have a Gmail account which uses smtp.gmail.com as outgoing and this works fine with Outlook. Can you help

In order to combat the spread of spam, two of the techniques employed by (some) ISPs and SMTP providers are:

1) To block port 25 (SMTP port) outbound from any device on the ISP's network to any server other than the recognised SMTP server the ISP provides for it's customers

2) To require customers to log into the SMTP server they are using to send mail through with login credentials

It sounds like Fasthosts are eschewing the blame of you not being able to talk to their provided SMTP server (if indeed they do provide one) by offloading the support headache to the relevant ISP. It's a semi-decent enough practice even if it does circumvent them actually doing any work on mail delivery troubleshooting.

It also sounds like your SMTP outbound via your GMail account is using the settings with which you log into your GMail account to retrieve mail in order to authenticate you when you send outbound email via that connection.

Therefore...your solutions are:

A) To provide the smtp.mail.yahoo.com connection with a relevant set of credentials that can authenticate you to that SMTP server

or

B) To use the GMail SMTP setup and associated authentication credentials in your setup configuration for your Fasthosts account

Groundbased,

Yahoo will not let you send mail from an unverified email address from their SMTP servers. All you should be required to do is verify your email account by updating your settings in Yahoo to say what email account you will be sending.

The Yahoo guide for this can be found here:- Why am I receiving an error when I send mail from Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Mac Mail, etc.? (http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html)

Cheers

I don't understand why I should use the BT outgoing server details as I also have a Gmail account.

As Mike says, if you normally use Gmail to send email, you should continue. Perhaps the insntructions would have been clearer if they referred to "your current outgoing email service" rather than specifically your ISP.

As you're already using Google, are you aware that Google supports IMAP?

All resolved using Mike's first suggestion.

I wasn't absolutely clear in the beginning, the gmail account is on a separate PC but using the same broadband connection, set up as an IMAP account.

This was straightforward but neither BT nor Fasthosts could be bothered to provide comprehensive instructions, its all in the set up wizard you just need to check the box and enter the outgoing server credentials. Thank God for Pprune.

Cheers,
