Wataniya admits pressure on yields at half-year point
David Kaminski-Morrow, London (05Aug09, 13:29 GMT, 131 words)
Middle Eastern carrier Wataniya Airways' parent, Kuwait National Airways, has posted a KD5.9 million ($20.6 million) loss for the first half of this year.
The airline, which began operating on 24 January, says it achieved 82% volume growth against a 75% hike in capacity, despite the difficult economy.
"Yield remain under pressure and below expectation," admits the airline, but Kuwait National chairman Abdulsalam Al Bahar points out that the company has only been operating for a few months and has incurred start-up costs.
Al Bahar adds: "We have indicators that are cause for optimism, such as the rapid increase in revenue we're witnessing and the performance of our subsidiaries."
Wataniya Airways is to receive a fourth Airbus A320 in October, and expand its network to include the Saudi city of Jeddah.
