I arrived in Canberra yesterday (around 21:30) to see Fire Trucks surrounding a Qantas 737.

Apparently, it suffered Severe Engine Damage to the Number 2 engine during takeoff, continued, and then returned about 15 minutes later.

It was a Perth-bound service, so was full of juice.

These things are only supposed to happen every six months in the Simulator!

Can anyone please add any facts to this event?

Cheers

Wot an engine failure, unheard of, never happens for real!, ONLY AS YOU SAY EVERY SIX MONTHS IN THE SIMULATOR.

Modern technology never breaks man, don't you know that.

Just imagine if the other quit in sympathy, poor sods would have been stuck up there, & forever unable to get back!:E

Dead duck on runway + busted fan blades on return = suspected bird strike

Terrorist in the long grass with a Duck firing gun acquired through devious means from a testing facility. theory + dead duck + fan damage = potential terrorist attack. Far more news worthy I believe. :E

You forgot to use the words "plummet", "air pocket" or "death plunge"
