I had an excited 'phone call this afternoon from a friend who lives just inland from Nice. At about 1415 local time he claims to have seen a 747, apparently on climbout, heading approximately west, at about 15,000 feet. It had a greyish fuselage and a logo on the tail which he could not make out.

I doubt if his estimation of the altitude is accurate, but he is sure it was a 747 (as opposed to a 340 or 380 which are the only other large 4 engined jets in the skies).

There is nothing scheduled out of there on 747s and nothing was shown on the Nice Airport website.

I suggested a freighter or some rich Arab's private plane .... any ideas anyone?

A 74SP left to Salzburg at 14:25 local and a 744 arrived from Pisa at 18:57 local.

Both of Saudi origin so you were not far off the mark!

Thank you.

Might I ask how you got that information or is it a 'secret' industry source?

There were actually two large aircraft departing out of Nice around this time yesterday.
The first was a Qatar Airways Cargo jet (an A340-600 I think) that's often parked up at the airport - this was probably what your friend saw. The second was a very stubby looking 747 (at least from the angle I was looking) which was probably the aircraft on its way to Salzburg.

I remember the 'stubby' 747SP's which Luxavia and then SAA operated for a while.

Can someone please tell me how you get this information about arrivals and departures as obviously only scheduled and charter pax operations are shown on the airport websites.

Qatari Amiri Flight A345 & A330 were in NCE earlier this week.

Saudi Royal Flight B747SP & B743 visited too.

Both Royal Flights operate in flag carrier colours
