I have noticed that BA's flight 94 YUL-LHR sometimes uses a call sign that is different than the flight number, specifically "speedbird 8 Yankee Golf". as far as i know there is only one BA flight per day from YUL to LHR. any insight appreciated. thanks!

Speedbird 8YG is indeed the callsign used by flight BA094. As I understand it, alphanumeric callsigns are designed to be more distinctive and avoid confusion with other similar flight numbers that might be in the same airspace. I have no idea how or if this is co-ordinated between different airlines, or whether they use some 'random' callsign generator.
