Whatever happened to red and white Dominies?

Changed the colours so no-one confuses fire engines and Dominies - "simple" as the meercat says!

Looking at the stance of the grow-bagged one in the second pic, it seems to have been nothing more than a "Bladder Full" caption.

I guess if you're going to pull over for a leak, NCL is as good a place as any.

Is that LHS window open or just missing?

My God, a Dominie!! Do they still exist? It must be the multiple layers of Red/White/Gray/Black/Yellow etc paint thats holding them together.

Still in debt thanks to the Dominie. Recovering one with (funny old thing) a LHS windshield failure from Stavangar in the '70's cost me £3 a pint of beer and £15 for a burger and chips.

I earned £17 per week in those days.

Blimey - quick check in logbook reveals I flew exercise D2 (2nd ex on the advanced nav course) in XS 728 on 8 December 1969 at Strad. Wonder if it's still got Decca fitted!

No, but the ham sandwich you left behind was only recently recovered. :)

That's what I thought "'streuth, they've changed a bit since I was there". Must be privatisation that lets the marketeers choose the fire and rescue colour scheme.

Can't work out where it is or the direction of the photo.

Aircrew the world over will be horrified to think that one of their own might have left a sandwich behind.

Looks like it's just on the loop between Holds A2 and A3. (Not that I have ever used Newcastle much over the last two decades or so  )

Tanker, there's more left of that Dominie than there is of Strad!

Bugger - always wondered where that sandwich went! What's at Strad then GA? Seem to remember it became a prison - certainly happened to Lindholme after I left.

it was bothering me but it makes sense now

camera is at the end of the pier and the foreshortening confuses a rusty memory. The old road into toon is in a cutting just beyond the fence.

Thanks Cgb

Sorry Tanker but to answer your question, basically bu--er all. Yes some buildings are used to house unmentionables but others such as the hangers went years ago. If you have a squint on google earth you'll see that virtually all of the airfield has gone, most of its concrete used as hardcore for the new M11, well newish. There is a memorial on the site which is well looked after. Also, if you are interested there is a book on the history of RAF Stradishall written by a chap I used to know called Jock Whitehouse and his mate Spencer Adams. A good very well researched read!
