Brisbane Flying schools

G'day guys. I'm currently in grade 12 in Brissy and will hopefully start training at the beginning of next year. I've used the search function and have found some old threads on this topic but could anyone provide me with current info on brissy flying schools. I'd preferabley like to go to archerfield as this is closest to where I live so any info on the schools there would be much appreciated. I've read about these so called 'sausage factories' but are they really that bad as to change school?? Any info or recommendations on schools would be much appreciated.

I've been doing some research into the Brisbane flight training scene for a nephew. I trained in the 70's so there wasn't much left fom those days. In short, without naming companies, If you want to get value for money and not get stuffed around:
1. Don't pay for the full course up front.
2. Don't train anywhere that have contracts to train foreign students as they will always have priority over you.
3.Get all your theory exams out of the way so that you will not be delayed in your flying progress.
4. If you are not talking to the Chief Flying instructor it's just bull****, especially if it's coming from a pretty girl, they're trainee pilot bait, that's why they are behind the counter.
5. If they can fob you off once with an excuse they'll do it all the time. Don't be afraid to take your money and walk, they must give you a copy of your training record when you leave, don't let them bluff you.
6. Remember that aviation appears exciting and romantic and attracts a lot of dreamers and would-be heros. Because of this, it draws the sharks and conmen like blood in the water.

Forgot to add, in my opinion, stay away from Archerfield. Try Redcliffe, Caboolture or even Toowoomba.
I should also add I have no vested interest in the Qld training scene, unless it's twin engined, red and turbofan powered,

Sad to say that on most points the Baron is correct.

Best place to start is to visit all the schools at Archerfield if that's where you want to fly (you'll soon work out it's cheaper to drive to Redcliffe or Caboulture). Go with a friend or a parent. If whoevers on the front desk when you turn up doesn't have time for you, then don't waste your time on them. Simple. You're the customer who's going to spend up to 15K or so getting a PPL. If they're to stupid to realize this then walk away.

Also have a look at the aircraft. Clean and new or newish is good. I visited an aircraft hirer at YBAF a couple of months ago regarding a C172. People in the office - rude and unhelpful. Aircraft - dirty,smelly and old. Sorry but that's a bit rich for $210p/h + landing fee.

Sam old mate, don't put up with any **** from these operators. And to repete the Barons comment - NEVER NEVER pay upfront.

When he was head buzzed into going to Sydney to a "training academy" :ugh: he wisely sort the opinion of myself, who with not a lot of knowlege then engaged Chimbu Chuckles and FTDK and a few others to offer guidence.

I think the Baron's comments will support the PM you already have.

Sam, my advice is to go to these info-gathering sessions armed with as much prior knowledge as possible.
With regards to Archerfield, there is a fellow who posts on PPRuNe as "Ando1Bar". He is one of the brightest young instructors I have seen in a very long time, (and works at Archerfield). He is an aviation enthusiast and I'm sure would be able to give you some good gen, without pushing any particular wheel-barrow. Perhaps if you were to PM 'Ando1Bar' he would be able to help you with your enquiries.

Come on guys, we're not all bad over here at YBAF. Used to think the same as the above when I flew elsewhere though. Not all schools have untidy aircraft or require you to pay unfront.

When last in the land of the blue sky, I stopped in at YCAB and walked into what turned out to be an RAA school that has a Piper Cub at what I thought was a very reasonable rate. The CFI there appears to have been around the block, with a good variety of experience, and this would be a great way to get an excellent foundation in basic flying skills. I am sure it would be well worth doing the first 30 or so hours in the Cub to not only learn heaps, but to experience classic aviation. You can then move on to a Wichita spam can to get CASA licenced, but you will have discovered what the joy of flying is really about! :ok: (PS I have no affiliation with this organisation and don't even live in Aus anymore!)

I'll give Ando1Bar a rap as well, and he's correct in saying they're not all bad at Archerfield, just make sure you do your reasearch and ask the hard questions.

Welcome aboard mate. I'm currently learning with Aerodynamic Flight Academy at Caboolture. Give them a try - Bryan Carpenter is the man to talk to there, and an absolute wealth of experience (great guy to boot - an airman's airman who will put you at ease whilst ensuring you learn from his experience). Google their website for details.

Caboolture is a busy little airfield with many differing types of traffic in the circuit (not forgetting the meatbombs and the wildlife) - so you'll certainly learn some valuable "off-syllabus" stuff there too.
