Did anybody else see one of our C130K SF Hercs on Top Gear last night, there was also a C130J, which I'm pretty sure was one of ours. Very artistic camera work. Anybody have any idea when this was filmed?

How do you know the J was not SF as well.

TBT,
How do you mean, 'our'?
It was filmed in the US, do you suggest it was flown out there for Top Gear or 'happened' to be there and agreed to do a bit for TG?

(Mod Note: Max pic size 800x600 please)

The K was definately 'ours', you picture the J which looks like 'ours' but can't be sure, hence the wording in my original post. Don't know if it was an SF J but definately an SF K.

Complete and utter coincidence. It just so happens that Top Gear was filming at the same airfield that the C130s regularly practise at.

Besides, can you imagine how much the BBC would have to cough up to hire two C130s (wargoers too) to deploy overseas for a bit of filming?

I do think, however, that the people behind the cameras made full use of the exercise going on behind them and why not? The BBC gets some particularly exciting footage, the RAF gets some free publicity and it provides a briefly interesting talking point.

Nice one for all concerned methinks.

Edited to add: Besides you can definitely tell its one of our J's because the No1 engine's nacelle bears no similarity to the colour of the rest of the aircraft!

Thanks for asking TBT - was wondering the same myself but had completely forgotten by this morning! I'm sure quite a few of the aviators involved in the film were more than happy to play for the cameras - was a stunning piece! :D

I was thinking that more could have been made of the fact they were RAF aircraft, but then I imagined all the bleating that would come from the "transgendered lesbigay ethnically dressed one legged single adoped non farting vegetarian cat lovers against fun" if they thought they'd flown out just for that... :yuk:

Cool.

Glad the coincidence happened, it made a brill shot in an amazing 'article'.
Cant wait for KB to get onto the TG track. Wonder though, how he would do in the reasonably priced car. :ok:

Is there such a thing as an 'SF' J yet...?

farting vegetarian cat lovers against fun"

Do you know anyone who doesn't fart?
I certainly am a cat lover, farting gives me great pleasure although I can't speak for those in the immediate vicinity, but I'm not a vegetarian nor against fun so I can only tick two of your four boxes.

Back on thread, whether it was "ours" or "theirs" the article was good, interesting and showed Jez in a very human light in as much as, he looked at times as though his pants were being filled with more than air. (Oh dear, back to the farting)

Twas James, not Jez, but yes, his expression said it all when they went over that jump.

Was impressed by the timing of the J shot, especially as all three were lined up perfectly!

Wonder how many takes that took?

Nice use of the regular exercise in Inyokern by TG. Lucky to tahe the opportunity for the ex will not exist for much longer I fear. The death of CP must surely be on the cards by now.

Sorry Shack37, I missed the hyphen off, and the sentence split over 2 lines - it was non-farting, so you only tick the cat lover box... I won't hold that one against you though! :ok:

It must have taken a hell of a lot of co-ordination - as much with the taxying aircraft as with the airborne ones!

I thought that the image of the Charlie 130 with the bike and car going in the opposite direction was excellent, must be RAF, the Yanks would never get the timing that spot on:)
I have seen the RAF at El Centro, including the Ramada bar:ok: but I didn't recognise the airport on Top Gear, so I did a bit of a Google and found this,

. . . an ideal location for film productions requiring an open-air environment with an unobstructed natural background. Paved runways and taxiways can be used for ground vehicle and aircraft scenes, including high-speed operations. Outdoor sets of virtually any size can be constructed to meet your filming requirements

The runway and hanger are some of the off-road bits are all Inyokern with possibly a little China Lake added for extra wrecked aircraft.

Looking at the aircraft it has the SKE bump on the roof which would make it USAF.

Are you lot absolutely sure that this was "well timed" as opposed to superbly edited?

This is a television show after all :}

As do some of 'ours'

Certainly was an entertaining piece, but surely the timing of the Herc and the vehicles is (or could be) a result of some of the wizards of television and whatever their version of Photoshop can do ?

Listened to James May being interviewed today on Radio 5 Live circa 1530 local. He reckoned RAF was there doing hot n high training for Afghanistan. Admitted that there were ’several’ takes to get that shot. He also reckons that TG has some of the best video and audio guys in the business.

Thats right been going there for years.

Usually try to take a J and K

Having seen the list of BBC managers' salaries in the press I would have thought that sum would be regarded as petty cash by this overfed organisation.

Having lived in Ridgecrest some years ago I was so busy trying to spot what was in the background that I missed the action! Luckily I'd recorded it. Great sequence. The desert looked a lot greener than I remembered, though.
