Hell of a clever man, apart from all that aviation medicine stuff, he took about five minutes to diagnose my wife's sinus problems which had baffled other doctors for months.

I had the privilege of briefly working with him at AMTC/RAF CAM in the 90’s when he was a consultant. The stories of his dramatic tests at very high altitude were always present and were legendary, one of which was watching the blood boiling in veins in his hands at some barking mad altitude! One of a kind, I’m sure his work has already saved and will continue to save many lives well in to the future.:ok:

In around 78/79, I remember working for a week at the British Embassy in Washington as the ‘dummy’ wearing the new AR5 as part of a proposal to sell to the DoD. John Ernsting and Freddie Hurrell were both there as avmed specialists, and both went out of their way to make me feel welcome and part of the team. Rumour had it that John Ernsting deliberately sat in a ‘spin’ box, wearing AR5, to make himself sick, to ensure that the kit worked properly!

A real gentleman who contributed enormously to aircrew safety.
